changing the frequency.:ausflag:

how do the manufactures set their frequencies in their metal detectors? if one opened one up,is there a potimeter or such that you could adjust to detune it to a lower frequency.bye for now, blowfly

In the old days of BFO machines, it almost might be that easy. But most modern machines have tightly controlled oscilator, and detector coils are wound to resonate at or near the operational frequency of the detector. Lower freq, more turns of wire in the coil; higher freq, fewer turns raises the point of resonance. If the freq is changed significantly without matching the coil, then sensitivity (depth) will suffer. Some machines may use several frequencies at the same time, and possibly gain some performance. This is done by using a freq that is a direct multiple, called a (2nd, 3rd, etc) harmonic of the resonant frequency of the coil. The signal loss on harmonic frequencies is measurable, but significantly less than at frequencies that are not selected harmonics.

thank you bill-de,i have asked this question before, but no one would give me an answer. i have two detectors given as gifts.both have the same frequency.so i thought rather than selling one i could change frequency, that way i wouldn't offend one of the givers.oh well ,i'll hang one on the wall as a back up.thanks again, blowfly

What model detectors are they? Some, like the Fisher 1236x2, Tesoro Vaquero, and some others, have changeable frequencies. You don't have to move the freq much to eliminate cross-talk between two same-model machines. So it may be possible to do it on the ones you have. I'm not a detector tech, but I do have a technical background and practical experience in electronics troubleshooting and repair. I may not be able to help with changing the freq on you detector, but tell us what it is.

BTW, you really shouldn't have interference between them unless they are in close proximity to each other, and are working on the same freq.

hi bill-de,i have a tesoro silver sabre and a compadre, they both operate on 12khz.cross talk is not a problem.both were gifts from my well meaning wife, who thought she was doing well, buying for me off ebay.because i like tesoro's.not the same frequency please!see ya ,blowfly

hi silversmith, the original silver sabre operates on 12khz as does the compadre and i thought i might have been able to detune one or the other to about 10khz.but that can't be,oh well,it was worth a try.blowfly
