Changing The Feel & Balance Of The CZ Detectors

I have always been a fan of Fisher metal detectors starting with the 1200X series of machines. Back in the early 80s Fisher led the way by introducing these high performance, light weight, very well balanced machines with their S Rod/T handle design. Fast forward to the CZ series (still rather light weight, cutting edge/dual frequency) machines but now they were using an S rod/handle configuration which I found to be far inferior in terms of balance/feel to the earlier design (especially with the larger coil (i.e. 10.5 inch). When I purchased my CZ3D, I hated the feel/balance with the 8 in coil and when I mounted the larger 10.5 inch coil, I found it to be intolerable. So I purchased a Fisher Model 1270 S Rod with the T handle, fashioned a bracket to mount the CZ3D control box on top of the T handle, like the 1200x series. Wow what a difference (especially with the larger coil), like old times with my 1200x machines. My CZ3D, now has a totally new/different (very comfortable) balance, feel and character. What a joy to use with the new configuration.

Nice job, I like it. Never much cared for the 's' rod either.

WOW! I like that set-up as I agree with you as the big coil does balance better on the CZ-70 type T -rod. I might have to do that myself as I hate to hip/chest mount a detector.

Pretty sweet! Did you get the upper stem from Fisher? And about how much was it if you don't mind me asking?

I strictly tone hunt with my CZ6a's, so I don't need to see the meter. This is how I rigged mine on a straight shaft.

Indeed some like the S rod and some like the pistol grip...might want to loosen the coil and let it just glide over the ground for better comfort. Indeed the 10.5 coil can really make the unit nose heavy. CZ7 and CZ7A had the right idea with batteries under the armrest sort of like the 1266 for ergonomics and balance but were short lived when they didn't sell well. Whatever works I guess and thanks for the mods and ideas in previous posts as they may work for you.

Hi Bradwheat777;

Yes I got the upper stem from Fisher. However if I remember correctly (been a while now) the T handle & Foam for the handle come separately and the handle (in two halves) is attached to the stem (in notches in the stem) and held together with screws. So if you decide to get one be sure and ask Fisher about the handle and screws. In any case the price for me (can't remember the exact cost) was rather reasonable. hope this helps.

I was just telling my hunting buddy the other day I would love to have a CZ mounted on a 1200 series rod system. I traded my CZ5 off recently or I would make the conversion like you did.
I think the 1266 was the most comfortable detector to swing that I have ever used... it felt like an extension of my arm. Very nice job on the conversion !............HH
