Changing of the tones.

Got out for a couple of hours today and hit a different oval. This is the first time that I've left my pocket probe at home and felt confident enough to hunt without it.The Ace didn't disappoint. Pinpointing was bang on. Only turned up one coin today, a 20 cent piece. I also noted a number of speared screw capes, which is indicating why there hasn't been much around lately.
What I found interesting today, is the low tone in the all metal mode. In the corner of this oval, a house that was built 120+ years ago used to stand. There is no visual reference of it being there, as it is all lawn there now. However, the detector always tells you where it is. The best way I know how to hunt these sites is in the all metal mode (just to prevent masking). This is the first time that I have hunted in this mode with this machine and I gotta tell ya, that low tone is heaps nicer on the ears than the usual tones. What I would prefer, is to use the low tone as the standard tone, and put the belltone in place of where the low tone is now. From a health prospective, I think that the current tones, if used for long periods, will damage your hearing at those pitches (in the same way a gun would if you used one without ear protection). Yeah I know, I don't have an inline volume control on my earbuds yet and that Garretts is well associated with this tone system, but I think that it is some food for thought.

P.S.I think it is time to change tack and start looking at sites that need permission to hunt in. Hopefully things Will improve. I might even see if I can find a few old sites that aren't in town.

I agree with you on the loudness of the tones. I thought about putting a volume control on my headsets. Have you tried the swimming holes? Maybe some out of the way places in the country.

Thanks for the reminder of the swimming holes John. I'd almost forgotten about the official one that used to exist in town up to the 1930's.It's destruction from severe flooding, lead to the construction of the Olympic pool. While the terracing may have been washed away, the area above may still be productive.

...I use the all metal mode often. Espcially good when out in the woods, hunting for a site on unfamiliar territory. Iron was the common trash of yesteryear and when you start turning it up, it is time to investigate. It can also help you define a site's boundaries, like that house. This is a trick John B. uses and talks about.

I also use the AM mode during hunts in kiddie lots, just because some small jewelry will come in at the foil range. And in the presence of moderate trash, the low tone seems to set off the other tones that much better.
