changing coils on machines

I've been metal detecting for about 6 years now off and on. I've been using a Whites 6000Di Pro with pretty good success, but never really thought I had it really dialed in. I never found anything over 6" to7" deep. I did however manage to find a Carlos and Johanna 1 Reale (holed) from about 1540 on the shore of the Potomac river near where I live in Southern Maryland. Awesome find, but will never find anything older here..haha. Was minted in Mexico City, the 1st mint in North America. Anyway back to my concern.
Because of my concern getting the machine tuned correctly I bought a new Mxt Pro for Christmas. Dale at Discover museum in Ocean City told me that they were very easy to ground balance and set up. My concern with the machine is the size of the coil. It came with a 12" 300 on it, but i'd like to use smaller coils on occasion. I read in the booklet that came with the machine that if you change coils" it is a good idea to send it to Whites to have it recalibrated"! I'm hoping this is not true, because that would be a complete nightmare! Any helpful knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Also, what do you think the best all around coil is for searching shorelines and ground with a medium to light amount of trash in it? I can't wait to get out of this house and freezing weather to try my new machine out. I think I'll be spending much more time detecting since this machine seems way easier to set up than my Whites 6000 Di. I hear nothing but rave reviews about the machine.
Thanks for your assumed responces. Steve
Happy hunting!!

Ps...Where do you enter all of your info that shows up when you post?

Have had 6 different coils for my MXT from different manufacturers - no need to send anywhere - unplug one and plug the other in - easy - as regards size it's down to conditions - if the trash is light then I'd be happy using my 10 x 12 as the recovery speed is very good - I have an 6 x 8 for when the going gets tough but only use that on a couple of sites - I'm in the UK by the way but trash is trash - stick with the 12" before deciding if you NEED a small coil - have fun - :ukflag:

Welcome to the Forum Steve and Dale in Ocean City didn't steer you wrong. For beach and light trash, the 12" coil will work fine if you don't mind the extra weight. The 950 and 5.3 conicals and the 6X10 DD are three other coils that seem to be favorites in other ground and hunting conditions. White's needs to be a little more clear on the calibration statement which refers to a more permanent coil replacement for the 12" coil. The calibration is to adjust the depth reading of the target which will be off slightly when changing to different sized coils.

Congratulations on your 1 Reale find and I'm sure you will really like the simplicity and depth of the MXT when you get the chance to get out hunting with it.

I use coils from the 12" down to the 4X6 shooter with good results and no problems.
