Changing coils/headphones on CZ-21

Serpent

New member
Hi guys!
Have anybody tried to change a stock coil and/or headphones on CZ-20/21 using waterproof cable connectors?
If yes, what connectors did you use?
Any suggestions, please!

Don't have any suggestions and welcome some but they are hand wired and to maintain water integrity might be a job for a Factory Tech.....

Well, Excalibur coils and headphones are also hardwired, but still many folks managed to get interchangeable stuff on their machines. Why is the CZ situation different?

Its not as I have seen kits to do just that....would search the web or contact dealers that sell underwater units...might post on the dealers sections of the classifieds also.
Surprised by now someone hasn't chimed in with the info you need..One of the surf and sand forums is also a thought.

Here is a link to a headphone attached with a connector:

Serpent,
Down at the bottom of that thread Clive (cjc) says:

"The mod was done by the man himself MGM. It's a bit clunkey with the big Ikalite plug. It needs a lot of strain relief to not flop around but it is watertight and secure. Great tone too.
The small "Bucanneer" connectors don't have a good rep."

They are the connectors used on the Excal. They can be a little difficult to find at times and are not cheap.

I am a computer tech with over 20 years of experience. I would advise you NOT to try to open the case. I did with two and couldn't get them to work again. Had to send them both in for repair. Also, even if you could get them to work, there is NO way to know if you sealed them without getting them wet.

I have seen the conectors work but I am happy with my CZ-20 with the 8 and CZ-21 with the 10 inch coil.

Scuba is right on if it has to be opened up and a water unit its a factory job to keep the water out integrity.

Keep in mind they do make plastic cones that fit over spliced wires and fitted with crimp closures on both sides but diameter is critical of the inside opening and can leak if not the right diameter for the wire be it coil or headphone wire...

Imagine companies will handwire different size coil on a unit for a price and might call the company for additional data...

Also, on these units the the detector is tuned to match the different coils (that's the claim anyway) unlike land units.
And if you don't get it sealed right and you dunk it, its most likely the end of the detector.

I don't think tuning for different size coils is an issue as they make a small and large coil for the land CZ's and they work without any problems...CZ-21 is just a land CZ without a meter locked in saltmode in a watertight box...

Bulgin Mini's work fine for the headphones but not the coil, the signal leaks out forming a small coil, Capacitive effect? But there are plenty other Bulgins, and the larger work better from what I have heard.
