changing coils from stock to 5.75" on Tejon question

Tony N (Michigan)

Active member
I'm getting a Tejon and it is coming with the stock coil. I am also getting the 5.75" coil.
Do I need to send the detector into the factory to have it tweaked for the smaller coil?

And what if I ever get the 12 x 10 widescan coil? Will the detector need sent in to have it tweaked for that coil?

Thanks,
Tony

Hey Tony, I am by no means an expert on tuning coils to a detector, but I have several coils for each of my detectors and never sent one it to be "retuned". The reason is because I swap coils a lot, using different coils for different applications. (isn't that why they sell extra lower rods?) And, if they have to tune the detector for one specific coil, then obviously it will be "out of tune" for the others. In other words, if they have to change the tuning to accommodate your 5.75, then it would be off for the stock coil.

From a personal standpoint, I really like the 5.75 HOT coil for the T/V/C. Once I got mine, I seldom use the stock coil.

Kind of funny you posted this today. I also have a DeLeon with the stock coil, the 4-inch coil and a Troy Super 7 coil. (by the way the Super 7 is my favorite Umax coil). Anyway, I recently bought a new 7-inch widescan Umax coil and it wouldn't stabilize. Chattered all the time, regardless of soil conditions or settings. Wouldn't work on my DeLeon, a Cortez or a buddy's DeLeon. But, my other 3 coils work fine on all three detectors. So, I am sure it is just a bad coil (or the widescans are poorly designed). Anyway, the dealer I got it from bailed out on me, so I wrote Tesoro and asked them how to send it in for repair. They told me I had to send in the detector control box along with it so they could "recalibrate" the detector for the widescan coil. I told them I was confident that the coil was the problem and felt no need to send in the detector. I told them that I didn't want the detector recalibrated for the DD coil when I planned to use the concentrics 90% of the time. They reiterated that they were unsure they could help me if I didn't send in both the coil and the housing. Well, I mailed in the coil today. And I did not mail in any of the three control boxes that the coil wouldn't work on. I did include a note that instructed them to throw it away if they couldn't fix it and wouldn't replace it. No use to waste $ on shipping me back a coil that won't work. It will be interesting to see if they fix it, replace it or just simply throw the coil (and my future business) away. I'll keep you posted. HH Randy

Hi Digger,
Thanks for the good info.

I've heard that even though the 5.75 is a lot smaller than the stock coil that comes with the Tejon, that is is almost just as deep yet better at separating between junk.

I hope that this Tejon will go deeper than the Muskateer as I have hit coins with that machine that were at the very edge of detection in just giving a ever so slight whisper.

I got some ratphones coming too. They are supposed to extend the signal a little bit longer I think. So rather than getting a slight tick for a deep coin with the Tejon it will be a longer tone (I hope.)

I'm so used to the Explorer and DFX that I hope I can make the transition to a non-metered like the Musky.

You'd think if Tesoro can put four tones on one of their machines that they could do this on their Tejon?

Tony

Tony, I find the Tejon hunts very similarly to the Advantage, as far as depth and sound differentiation. However, don't expect to be able to do as fast of sweep with the Tejon as you do with the Advantage. I have found that when I am fast "Xing" over a target (to hear the consistency of the tone as with the Advantage) the Tejon will not always pick up the target. As well, if you have the sensitivity as high as some of us like to run, it will false easily. I have had several sites that it just wasn't the right tool for the job. Primarily when hunting an old corn field. Evertime I would swing the coil over a downed corn stalk, it would sound off just like a coin. I could only tell the difference when I swept from several directions as the tone was solid when swinging perpendicular to the stalk and broken when swinging parallel. Not a big problem for some, I am sure. But it interrupted my hunt enough that it drove me nuts. And, as you know, that was a short trip!!! HH Randy

manual ground balance that is tied with both the All Metal and Discriminate modes. This allows the operator to set a functional GB for each coil in use.

Models that have a fixed (factory preset) GB will sometimes have difficulty using an accessory coil. Often, detectors are shipped with a coil that they were checked out with and critical calibrations done with. If an accessory coil and the detector's GB setting are just a little out of adjustment, you would have to tweak the GB.
