change your coil,,,must re-tune ????

New member
wanting to get a different coil for my Silver,,,but not if you have to send the MD in for a tuning each time. Is it necessary?

Hey grouser, No need for any retune! Slap that Baby on and go at it! Beauty about Tesoros is that from their beginning their inards are set up so as to be able to handle the coil changes, and still get goof results from whatever coil you use, so long as you follow procedure and match the proper coils and machines as stated by Tesoro. You know, some coils are for some machines and some are for others.Probably be hard to mis match any with the 4-5 Pin set up but I think in some cases it has happened. Some folks have the coil -machine tune done when they want to get the very most out of a particular Machine -Coil combination and have plans of using that particular set up without changing it.. Snoop around though and find out what other folks are doing along those lines and it will give you a better idea about what to expect. HH, Charlie

:) We knew what ya meant Charlie.----I thought I was the only one that goofed---err, I mean, did that!------Agree with you on the coil thing.---A person can periodically have Tesoro check the Silver for callibration but I use various coils on my Silver & it works great with them.---The Silver is one of the few detectors with a pre-set gb that seems to work very well in my highly mineralized ground (and with different coils on it).---------Del

Some standard coin-relic units are 10 or 12 freq. Also you get into widescan and concentric...these two variables make a tuneup by Tesoro indicative especially if you feel you are not getting everything out of your unit..With your metered Tesoro's concentric and widescan will produce different reading so that is also a variable..All in all you probably don't need a returning but if there is doubt in your mind send it into Tesoro for a tuneup as above are reasons...Alson Tejon-Vanquero-Lobo super trac are 17 something freq. and wouldn't fit anyway as they are 4 pin where the other is 5 pin....

In more mineralized soil it MAY be beneficial to have the coil matched to the particular detector for the best possible performance although I've used most of the coils on my machines with no problems. I do get chatter in my soil with the 12X10 spider mounted on my DeLeon which could be adjusted at the factory, but I just use it on my Eldorado with the manual ground balance which takes care of the problem. In my limited experience chatter or other problems are more likely when moving up to a larger coil versus changing to a smaller one. I assume that's due to the amount of soil being read by the larger coil.

huummmm good adivce here guys thanks. I was looking at the 12" x 10" Concentric to replace the standard 8" for more depth,,,I guess I will try it and then see if I need to re tune,,,,,I thought it was an automatic trio to the shop for a new coil,,,thanks again

My son uses that setup on his Silver. Works great out of the box with more depth and coverage. It's a LOT heavier than the standard coil though.

Don't think you would actually want to replace the 8" stock on the Silver with the 10X12 but that coil will get you waaay more depth (when needed).----The down side is what has already been mentioned---it makes the Silver considerably heavier (out there on the end of the shaft)---effects balance A LOT.-----If you don't think so, try swinging that baby for 2 or 3 hrs.----It will also be a little noisier (in most areas) than the stock coil because of it's physical size but that "stands to reason".-----I'm not knocking the 10X12, it's a great coil & turns the Silver into a depth hog--a person just has to be aware of the weight thing.----You'll find that out soon enough when you start using it. :)-----Put it this way, I got one (10X12) and wouldn't sell it because it (definitely) "fills a niche".---------Del

I will start lifting weights to build up my arm hahahahha thanks for the advice,,,think I will get one,,,,anyone have a good used one for sale ????
