CHAINS

I don't have any chains to test. My questions are does the CTX pick up chains? What mode does it have to be on for chains? If it does pick up chains what kind of doppular like blob does it trace on the screen?

Simple answer is NO - unless it is a heavy "curb link" design or it has a pendant/charm on it. On normal sized necklaces/bracelets, The VID will be reflective of the CO/FE values of the pendant/charm. If you find a pendant/charm by itself, spend a moment sifting the sand with whatever tool you use - I have found a few thin chains that way. I did find a 14K gold curb link bracelet about 2 years ago, but it weighed 86.7 grams - 3.05 ounces! The CTX basically saw each link of that bracelet as a ring. Registered as a 12/23.

i tested some chains and as with most others such as the xcall, etrac, and explorer series it depends....... a thin chain stretched out all detectors didnt give a signal. ball the chain up i can get a light blip that would be easly missed, with a heavier chain much the same just a little better when balled up. with my testing the 3030 doesnt seem much better than the others. the strange thing is if you have just a single link of the chain such as the clasp all the detectors will pick it up. put that clasp with the chain and it dissapears..... something to do with all the little links of the chain together causes them to give a falsing. with everything else the 3030 is a super machine. i have owned the etrac since it came out and have done well with it. i didnt think the 3030 would be any better but it is !! especially around alot of iron it also seems to go a bit deeper too.

good luck !!

my etrac has no problem getting chains

You are my hero

Try Garretts AT-Gold / Pro it can find a small Chain,

I go tone yesterday with no problem. I'll be posting a video of it later today

My CTX pick up silver open chain with readout 1:7 I was thinking it was crown cap but it was sound a little different. 3mm curb link gold chain was sound like foil 11:02. Good luck.

Interestingly enough, I found a chain today, granted it wasn't pure gold but it did come in loud and strong at an odd TID of 34.01.

This thread got me curious so I decided to test a couple of chains I have found with other machines.

This is an air test with 6" coil cause that's what was on the machine. But may also be appropriate for its sensitivity.

Heavy gold chain box link type 12-2 to 12-5 at a range of 3-4" with 6" coil. I tested with the chain stretched out in the air and waved in front of coil parallel to the overlapped windings. Rotate 90deg to coil and reading more iffy but still there somewhat. Balled up no real difference from stretched test.

Light silver chain thin 12-1 to 12-2 at 3-4" with 6" coil. I tested same way as gold chain no real diff. possibly an extra inch balled up.

Just for reference I tested a nickel with the same settings and was getting solid tone at 5" and choppy at 6" Sens was at Auto +3 level 19 for the test which was in the house so I bet outside you could get deeper.

Main thing is that the chains do register. They are in the low foil range and I dig a lot of those numbers especially at the beach and in the water. On a recent beach hunt it was clear others had preceded us as all that was left were scattered pennies and lots of foil and a few tabs. If you leave the foil and tabs your leaving the gold.

I found tiny chain yesterday, while I was digging coin about 2 feet from chain. I was lucky it was on top of sand, but my CTX didn't pick it up I was curious took chain and put it on wet send and only then CTX give me readout. very interesting because even tiny earring in dry sand never was a problem. any suggestions appreciated.
