learn where the cutoff for square tabs is. Then, dig everything at or above that line. Whatever it is, it'll likely be at least worth $.01 to dig up!

A clad dime has lots of copper in it and this is a problem as pennies according to their year vary as to where they come in on the meter. Indeed if you hunt local parks are going to be fooled, a nice silver dime usually hits quite accurately on the meter..Just like tabs and foil indeed can be a nice gold ring digging for a clad dime may get you a penny.

I dug a new quarter yesterday that rang in as a penny.

I have had that happen more than once. With all the copper in the clads it's tough for the detector to figure out which is which. How I long for the days when we had real money.

Even when I dig a penny thinking it's a dime, I'm still a little richer. I know some people try to ignore them, but those pennies can add up amazingly fast since there are so darn many of them. A penny saved is just a #####ed penny, but 100 make a dollar. Old John-Edmonton buys a gold coin with his pennies every year: Myself, I recover enough to buy a case of beer. HB

Yeah I never pass a penny up. Figure it's a penny more than I had and they do add up. I can remember when a penny bought a whole lot. When I was a kid they had penny candy and three for a penny candy but then you could get an ice cream cone for a nickel and pay your way into a real movie for a dime. My mom used to give me a quarter and it would pay my way into a movie and buy me a box of popcorn, a coke, and a candy bar. My how times have changed. Don't know if they still have them but Vegas used to have penny slot machines and they were busy all the time.

Excellent commentary! Pennies, dimes, quarters...like I said it will usually be worth AT LEAST .01 to find out! Nearby trash, ground conditions, etc. can confuse a detector, and I have had things look like a penny that were much nicer, like a small silver amulet. So dig em up!
