Cen-Tech pinpointer test

Mr. Beard

Here is a video on an air test that I did today, of the Cen-Tech pinpointer sold by Harbor Freight.

Nice job on the video, Mr. Beard!

If you're on a tight budget the Cen-Tech is a worthwhile tool.

Interesting that the best depth is on the nickel.

I don't know man. I would much prefer a plastic shovel to that thing. I went down that line and yes I consider it a better pinpointer than those things you see advertised at $39.95 by many detector manufactures, who in my opinion, import them from China and put their own names on them. BUT "Swear to GOD", if you ever get your hands on a Garrett Propointer, you'll toss the Harbor in the garbage can, and kick yourself in the behind for the time you've wasted. I KNOW, I'm still kicking my self.....:rage:

Hey, good show on the video though. Sounds like you have a neat family (in the background!)

The Cen-Tech is a great way to find out if you really like using a pinpointer for very little cash. I started dectecting in 93 and have never used on until I bought the Cen-Tech this year. I just didn't want to spend a hundred or so bucks and find out I didn't like using it.
Gotta say, I really like using it. I did go to lowes and buy a toggle switch and replaced the push button switch on the Cen-Tech. Works much better.
Eventually I will shell out the cash for a Garrett, but for now I am happy with the Cen-Tech and am glad I bought it.

Dan

I see the Cen-Tech dose about the same as the Whites pinpointer. I like the Whites that i got free with my MXT . but i did get a Cen- Tech to lone to friends. Some of us just don't have the money to buy the best, but we don't rub it in. Try a Cen-Tech for $16.oo all of you that can afford one and if you don't like it you can throw it in the trash can. If you're really hep on the Harbor, what I did on mine before I got the Garrett, was I put in a 2 pole 2 throw toggle switch, middle position being off . I then took out the light function, and installed a micro-vibrator. That gave me the audio beeper and a vibrator. I thought it worked very well and was tickled to death with it, until the Propointer showed up. All other vibrators I've seen just start vibrating when they "see" a metal object. The Garrett vibrator speeds up and slows down, so you can tell as you get nearer to and farther away from a metal object. It's just plain friggin spooky.
Be careful having a light on anything. If you get caught out in the dark, in a park, in a big city, the last thing you want is a "here I am" light glowing while your attention is elsewhere. :sadwalk: Watch your back!

those of you that want to throw them in the trash you send to me and i'll resolder them and there good as new, i've had ibought brand new 2 yrs ago and yes the first 45 minutes and then got to resolder but it won't happen again, all i can say is to me still beats cuffing through the soil with out it!

I just wanted to show a better test than what I have seen on other videos.

I wish someone would gather up all the more popular pin pointers and do the same test video you did for a comparative. the best, Ron.

...the Cen Tech pinpointer works. I've used the Garrett and I liked it. I also found that while it was useful, it wasn't the greatest thing on the planet. For some the cost might be a show stopper.

Remember, the aim here is to find something in the dirt or down in a hole - not to substitute for our main detector.
The whole notion of a pinpointer with a 6" range or a gazillion nifty features seems silly, sort of a "see what I can do?" kind of thing.

Looks like the CenTech unit will do the job - if you do yours.

Pretty neat video - the non vocal approach. Nice.

I think is great. I just need something to detect for those times when you have all the dirt out of the hole but you don't see the actual metal being detected. Thank you for the video.

Good video. Looks like it meets the minimum requirements.

I'm still partial to the Little Wizard II for inexpensive, effective pinpointers. 2" on targets and when it drops in performance to where you're only getting around a half inch, thats when you get a new battery. Broad scan or turn up on edge for tight scan. Somewhere between $15 and $21. I've moved on to a Uniprobe but I've still got that 5 year old Little Wizard II and it still works even though I've dropped it in water puddles, filled it full of sand and generally treated it like a box end wrench :) Only thing about LWII are that they don't like the cold. If you're using them in cold temps you need to warm it up under your arm for a bit :)

Still, great video and am sure it will help some folks.

I have seen the text with Vibro pro 850 and Whites bulleye 2. And the Cen-Tech pin pointer is just as good as these. The tests are one you-tube.com. I would like to see a test of the Garrett pointer.

Hi Norman..........

This is Robbie from dirt journal.:)

The unit is really worthless

geez.... really? a $15 pinpointer that you find worthless?

If you're on a budget and you want to know if you'll use a pinpointer, you can't beat this price. After dropping a grand on a mediocre AT BEST detector, this was the deal of a life time. If you've pinpointed properly to begin with you don't need more than 1.5 inches anyway.

I thought that might this be you. I would like to thank you for your air test. I am going to pick a Cen-tech until I can afford a Garrett, See you next Sunday.

I would ask you all who may have one of these units to unscrew the back. Look inside and find a little blue adjustment screw.
The turn the sensitivity knob on the outside to about midway.
Adjust the blue screw inside clockwise first until the sounds starts a continuous noise without a target. Turn the outside sensitivity knob up (clockwise again) until you hear no noise.

Then try a depth test... YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY see a marked depth difference... Mine went to 3-4 inches and fully functional right NOW...

To make it deeper go farther with your adjustments. I own a Garrett Pro-Pointer and use it religiously, but this Cen-Tec can do the rick if you play with the guts...

I have had mine seeing 6" distances in the air and widescan outer edge (touchy) BUTTTTT I had absolutely no more sensitivty adjustment on the outside knob..

Play with it and see what happens, cause I had a friend who needed to use one and bought one. We adjusted it, sprayed it with Trunk coating to kinda' seal it a little, and he loves it...

I have two of them they work great one for myself and the other is the wifes had them for over a year now with no problems
