Cemeteries

I know this subject has been discussed more than once with many different opinions most being negative towards detecting in old cemeteries. I was just wondering if any of you
have read the newest issue of Lost Treasure and the article on detecting cemeteries? I found it very interesting and for the most part agree with the article. There is just one thing the author said that I kind of took offense to. I know the same subject has been covered before on Geo-Caching forums and many people are against it. When I was reading those, I thought about my Dad and I thought I would never hesitate to put a geocache at his grave because he LOVED people and he LOVED a good puzzle above all else in his last days. Anyways I found the article very interesting!!!

I was surprised that article was in Lost treasure, with all the strong feelings from these forums. I would never detect in the cemetery in my town because it is very open and why give someone the idea you're doing something wrong. Now if I found an abandoned graveyard out in the woods somewhere??? I still would never detect around the graves out of respect, but where they parked the horse and buggies I would. Interesting topic that seems to never be settled>>>

Dirtdigginlady thanks for the insight on Lost Treasure Magazine article. I went to the Lost Treasure site this morning and went to the "Lost Treasure Tube" to watch their videos. I viewed the Video titled " Metal Detecting the Movie" I could not believe that they were metal detecting in a cemetery. I guess Lost Treasure Magazine condones that kind of detecting, but I personally don't condone it and never will. JMHO Dennis in Idaho

When I read this, I was in awe. I would NEVER hunt a cemetery. We know of one person that has hunted in these places and our respect for him went right out the window. How disrespectful! I don't think I wouldn't have a problem detecting on the outskirts of the cemetery near the road that was traveled. Not inside the cemetery grounds. I really hope people will think long and hard before they hunt burial grounds. As like my son, his friends have always put 2 quarters on his stone. I would be mad as a hornet if I knew someone was detecting around his stone just for a few dollars in change. How rude! Besides, I OWN THAT PROPERTY! As other family members own each plot of ground where their loved one is buried.....NO matter how old! I'll step down from my soap box. Thanks for listening to me. HH to all, Nancy

As far as owning cemeteries, every state is very different. I live in VA and if a cemetery is on your property, even if it is right in the middle - you don't own it. It is considered public property. My friend talked to a lawyer and he told her no she did not own that part of the land even though her land totally surrounds it. She sold the land and now the man that bought it is having to buy a new plot, casket, and vault for every person buried up there and move them (well pay a funeral home to move them) to their new location. He wants to put a road in and they told him the same thing. You don't own it but you can move it to get your property back.

My in-laws put in a little family cemetery at the very top of their property in the woods (where I want to be buried) and they were told the same thing. They can use it, bury people, maintain it but it no longer belongs to them and cannot be sold with the property.

I don't know everyone has such totally different views of these things. Personally I love cemeteries. I also think they are peaceful, and a wonderful place to visit. I think it is great that people geo-cache in them as long as they are very respectful. I know of lots of geo caches in them. I'm really thinking of putting one on my dad's grave. Now digging things off of graves where someone put them to be with their love one is just totally WRONG. However, hunting the roads, outskirts etc of esp old, vacated cemeteries would not bother me. I just feel like the spirits would appreciate the interest ha-ha. I guess I'm weird but that's what makes the world go round and round.

I contacted Mr. Lee Harris and he reviewed the video and removed it from the website. He stated, "You are right this is not the way we want our hobby portrayed."

Thanks Dennis for having me view the video and and also a big thanks to Mr. Lee Harris, publisher of Lost Treasure for removing it. HH to all, Nancy

We did good Nancy.:clapping: Hooha. HH Dennis in Idaho

You sure did Dennis! And also thanks to dirtdigginlady for bringing it to the attention of others. It only takes a few bad people to demolish the reputation that we've been trying to rebuild. :rage: One day at a time! HH to all, Nancy

We Nancy,We did it. It takes us all to do it not just one. Mr. Harris has not responded to my email complaint and he probably won't and I don't care but the video was removed and thats all that matters. If dirtdigging lady had not brought it to our attention on another subject we would not have even noticed and the video would still be on the Lost Treasure's website. Its too bad that Law Enforcement could not get involved at this point and cite the offenders after all they have the evidence of the violation. JMHO. HH Dennis in Idaho

You will get arrested here in Oklahoma for detecting on cemeteries with out proper permission. You can't even hunt the entrance road or around the fence line.

Good job Dennis and Nancy.................:clapping:..... I forgot to say thanks Dirtdigginlady............

Work well done folk's. (Can't imagine how anyone could think it was OK to hunt a hallowed area.) Thanks Dirtdigginlady... and all involved!

As juicy as it may seem to detect at a cemetery, DON'T DO IT! There is no shortage of places to hunt without disturbing sacred burial grounds.

I'm glad to see so many people are against this disgusting behavior. I wish we could get a petition started to BAN it from all cemeteries across the country. I know if I were ever to see anyone detecting my Grandfathers grave, I would beat them half to death with that detector. I'm usually mild mannered, but that would bring out the fight in me. That is just something you do not do out of respect. Thanks Nancy and Dennis for taking such a proactive approach.
