Cellar hole

Hate to sound like I'm stupid but, the cellar holes I keep reading about on this forum are they just places around old home sites where people stored their food to keep it from freezing? If that's so, why are they the places where most of the good finds can be found around old home sites?

If I understand it correctily a cellar hole is nothing more than a basement. Its the foundation of the house. I would imagine that it was used for storage.

Cellar holes are the foundations where houses once stood. I hunt them as much as possible here in NH. You can find them in lots of varieties, ie. brick, stone, cement brick etc... the older ones 1600's-1700's may only appear as a depression in the woods. Once you get in and dig around a bit you will usually find that it was lined with stones. They are great places to hunt in and around. Lots of times they are full of trash if they are near public access. Detecting around and away from them is good too.
