Cellar hole reveals nice dimes

Got out Sunday with my 13 y.o. son Matthew. He hasn't been out hunting with me recently because of all the things that go with being 13. School work, friends' houses, sports, more homework, etc. Well Sunday after the homework project was done we headed out to 4 cellar holes. We spent about 45 minutes at each and it was at our last that things brightened up for us.

Matthew had a few firsts and that should keep him hooked for a while longer.

We had gotten some relics like colonial buttons, (that was a first for him), a nice large caliber lead (another first), and on our last cellar hole he called over to me, under my earphones I thought I heard him say "coin" but he didn't come running over like I thought he would. After a few minutes of that word coin in my head I decided to see what's up. He smiles, and out comes the 1901 Barber. His first real silver, minus the wartime nickel he got in the spring. This one has some age and in decent shape.

Well not long after I got a nice 12-42 in 2 tone FE. I tried two directions and still nice signal. Used the scoop and about 4" down saw the heart pumping silver edge. Pulled out the 1876 CC Seated. That is my first "Carson City" coin. I also got parts of a broach. I couldn't find the inset whether a stone or picture.

Well we had alot of fun and firsts and will continue to hunt those cellar holes in the future. HH

Etracmick, Don't you just love those cellar holes. Congrats on the great finds and thanks for taking your Son detecting. Kids who do outside activities are less likely to get into trouble. We need more good citizens.

Great job. I remember back when I was a kid toting around an old TR detector looking for 'treasure'. I bet it made his week. Great memories. :clapping:

I have and old root cellar in the back yard, never been explored, I figure it had a couple of feet of soil on the roof before it caved in, probability was built in the early 1900s any tips.

etracmick.. your getting me going. Nice find..

Congratulations to you and your son on a great hunt and even better finds :clapping:

Ref. diggin in the cellar hole. Since it is in your back yard, try using different settings before you dig. You have the opportunity to find and mark targets and get them later. I usually use conductive, multitone just because that is how I learned the Etrac. I also now have started using the Two tone ferrous and that is how I found the above dime. There was alot of trash (next to the bottle dump from the old homestead), so that is why I gave the TT (two tone) a try, it paid off. Good luck and let us know how you did.

Very nice finds! I'm glad you shared them with us and tell your son congratulations. Good to see you spend time together outside!!!
