Tough shot with the bright background. How did you keep the shadows out his face?

I used flash fill. You can see the flash 'sparkle' in his eyes.
I used a program called "Back Light" in the "Scene" mode. This was a quick 'grab shot' because his dad was coming around the corner of the house, and I knew this little moment would soon be gone.

In many cases you can see the temperature difference when fill flash is used. Good job, it looks very natural.
