Cashless.....

Supposedly we are headed for a cashless society. What do you think will be the effect on coin hunting if (when) that happens ?

Not much...it has been said there might be more lost coins in the ground then most people think...almost as much as in circulation some estimate, then you have the way people think that have been using coins for so many hundreds of years.
Getting people to change is not easy.
Then add in the copper, nickel and zinc lobbies in Washington.
It is not logical to think in any way shape or form this country should still be making and losing money making one cent coins....and yet it still goes on.

Here is a site that says everybody, just everybody should want to keep that coin around...Americans for Common Cents.
Lots of numbers and facts most of which don't really pan out to be true.

Guess who is really behind this...

Lobbies have big money behind them and if we do ever get rid of coins it will be a long time down the road.
A long time.

I think there are way more things to worry about than this subject.

Well...some schools now have lunch accounts for kids. Parents put money in the account and the kid uses it to buy lunch AND no longer needs to carry lunch money/currency. For schools that have this in place, this should result in some decrease in clad finds. Let's face it...kids lose a lot of coins.

Please make sure to give all of your lose change to kids so they can seed the fields for us. Kind of like stocking trout for us dirt fisherman. :)

Also we should all lobby to eliminate the dollar bill in favor or the dollar coin or even a 5 dollar coin. It would definitely help raise the old clad totals.

At the very least go to the bank get a cr*p load of dollar coins and put them in circulation. I get jealous when I see guys in Europe finding euro or pound coins.

How long does money last? That depends on the denomination of the note. A $1 bill lasts 18 months; $5 bill, two years; $10 bill, three years; $20 bill, four years; and $50 and $100 bills, nine years. Bills that get worn out from everyday use are taken out of circulation and replaced. It looks to me that $1.00 dollar and $5.00 dollar coins would save money in the long run.

I support the idea of a cashless society. The coins we are finding will go up in value, but see the govt making it illegal to own. Or maybe they will make them artifacts and not to be disturbed. Our hobby takes a lot of hits from folks who do not metal detect. The truth is the coins are only worth what you are willing to pay for them. I use my clad for fun stuff. Keep my old stuff in a safe. Going to take my wife on a vacation some day if I live that long with it.

HA...
be assured Arch that there are far more pressing matters to worry about than new pennies/dimes and nickels being lost any longer....
between Trump/China...Putin and North Korea, lets just hope we all have a few more good years to detect in the first place.....
