Should I definitely carry on my detector versus checked luggage?

what do you all carry your MD in when you travel?

any issues going through security?

thanks for any advice......

We went to Mexico a couple of years ago and bought a used hard case Samsonite for $3.00, checked it on through, no problems at all. Both detectors and supplies fit nicely in the one case. Customs in Mexico was no problem either. He opened up the case and new what he was looking at, closed it and waved us on through.

hey did u find any cool stuff in mexico...i wouldn't think you would be allowed to detect with all the archeological history there...

As long as you stick to the beach areas, you are OK - just don't even think of using it inland.

We did indeed hunt the beaches around our resort and found about $30 US and Pesos, a handful of other foreign coins, recovered and returned two lost rings for people on the beach. I don't know about inland hunting but have read stories on the Internet of people hunting with no problems. It's my guess that some areas are off limits though. ALWAYS check first.

I've been carrying mine on for several year's and just in a regular case and use the overhead space. About 50% of the time they do ask to look at it, but never any problem. I do, though, take the batteries out. Batteries and wires do tend to make security a little nervous.

I heard that batteries are necessary if they want to see it work. I'd never check mine because of the horror stories I have seen posted. Also I believe there is a $200.00 replacement on each checked bags. I would like to know the answers to these two questions. Rob

In a couple dozen or so flights on N W airlines, never have they mentioned anything about the batteries (not being in the detector). My wife and I fly up to Mn two or three times a year and besides my detector being carried on, I also carry on a portable depth finder, also, less the batteries.

No, I would never check my detector, either.

From what I understand now that no electronic device can be carried on along with any liquids and has to go in baggage now. It is just what I heard on the new today.
I know when I ship a detector Priority mail I am told not to have the batteries in it anymore either as it is not allowed as it goes by air.

Like Rich said it sounded like they would rather not have any carry on luggage and prefer it be checked. I though electronics including computers were now a no no. I just couldn't see checking it unless it could be insured for replacement value. Rob

I just went to Tulsa, Oklahoma last week and I carried my detector on board with me. Even with all of the new regulations now being implemented, they didn't hassle me. However, I do pack the coils and batteries in my baggage which I check in.

However, things and rules change all the time. I would suggest you disassemble your detector and pack it securely in your check in baggage. I've had no problems doing this. You may run into trouble if you try and board with it: electronics, small box, and batteries, heavens NO! You get my point. If your willing to purchase a hardcase, pack it well and check it in with your luggage. Best way in the world to have absolutely no problems would be to grow a beard; wrap your head in a turban, dress in a sheet and sandals, and if anyone asks you any questions while boarding the plane ask: "Are you threatening me?" Be sure to say it with an eastern accent. They won't bother you at all as they are afraid of "profiling." Now me, a white guy from the south...hell no! They frisk me and my friends like we asked for a tick check at the massage parlor. Any concerns just call or better yet drop by the airport and speak to one of the bosses. They'll give you the current scoop. Good luck, David@Dixie

I just returned from Mn, flew Northwest from Memphis and carried on my detector. ONCE AGAIN, NO PROBLEMS. Going and returning, they did check out my portable depth finder, which I also carried on.

I travel for work alot and take my detector all the time as a carry on. I purchased some of those ABS plasic short handle shovels and a plastic grain scoop that I carry on also. If I will need to cut a plug I head to the nearest walmart and spen a buk or two. I will take my DetectorPro HH Diver alot because it does not take up much space but it loves pull tabs. I also take the Infinium because that breaks down easy also. I have only had them look once in my bag just to see what the coil was.
