Carpal Tunnel Question

undertoe

Member
Anyone suffer from carpal tunnel? How does it affect your hunting? What do you do for relief? Just had my BHID upgraded with the 12" coil, and I notice a big difference in the way it affects my carpal tunnel syndrome. Just wondering if anyone else has the same problem.

Wearing a brace on your wrist should help with that but i dont know how much or for how long. Also, a really light balanced detector helps. For example, I had a Tesoro DeLeon for my land detecting. If you picked it up it was so heavy but once you started swingin it felt like nothing I could go all day because it was balanced perfectly.

hey undertoe i can relate to some of what you are going through. i have carpal tunnel in both hands . i had the left hand fixed as it was causing me to many sleepless nights. i can tell you that from my experience the diagnosis (EM G ) .was more pain full than the surgery. 5 week recovery time. i started this hobby swinging a gta-1000which is very light .my next machine was a whites di 5900 which is much heavier than the gta 1000. i now swing a sovereign gt with the 15in wot coil which is almost as heavy as my two other machines combined.i am right handed and usually only detect on weekends for like 8hrs a day if I'm finding stuff.the best advice i can give you is easy does it. if I'm out in the Field and feel the slightest numbness in my right hand i simply switch hands and swing with my left hand for 10min or so by that time the right hand feels much better and i can go back to the right hand swinging for about a half hr before i have to switch hands again.with the sov gt i can hip mount the control box which helps quite a bit with the over all weight. the longer i practice this hobby the heavier the machine i find myself swinging .just seems the heavier the machine the more and better the finds.before i got my left hand fixed i would wear one of those braces to bed which keeps your hand straight while you sleep this helped but was not good enough so i got it fixed. before i had the surgery on the left hand i also found that swimming in cool water for two hrs or so would also make it feel much better. i still get a little bit of numbness in my hands on weekend nights but find my carpal tunnel is manageable as long as i dint over do it. i also changed jobs at work so i dint have so much wear and tear on my hands any more. hope this helps. .

Thanks for the info guys.I bought a brace for my wrist and at least now I can sleep.I think I am going to hip mount the BHID and give that a shot.I wonder if a straight shaft will help, maybe in the future I'll have to purchase one, gotta pay for the new coil first.

I can relate - I had it in both hands. I had the surgery done to both wrists about 14 years ago and it is so much better. The longer you wait, the more muscle mass you lose and the weaker you hands will be even after the surgery. My wrists/hands do not hurt any more, but because I waited (employer know what was going on and hid the facts from us - it ended up very bad for that agency) to get it done. Had I realized what it was earlier, my results would have been even better. My only residual is that i do not have endurance in the hands/wrists. I can swing a hammer, but my hand tires after a short while, or if I try to twist a lid of a jar, if I do not get it done the first try,I have to wait till my hand recovers before I can try again. But, I can hunt all day now, but before the surgery I would get shooting pains and the numbness and tingling in my hand drove me nuts. Before surgery, I could only hunt for about half and hour and then I had to rest my hands for about the same length before I could go out again. I am glad I got the surgery.

Search "Boomerang Bungee" on EBay and buy one. It takes ALL the weight off your swinging side and is infinitely adjustable. I attach mine to the harness on my Camelback and can hunt all day without fatigue or CT symptoms. And I have some serious CT symptoms due to my penchant for motocross.:stretcher:
