After supper tonight i went to the local sand box to get my autistic son started on metal detecting. I tryed a couple of weeks ago but my Stingray was a bit too heavy for him and he could swing the detector mutch. My brother in law lended us his Ace 250 he had won in 2006 at our club hunt. His detector was still brand new in the box. He wouldn't sell it to me because he still have plans to try it on some day but if my son is really interrested, i'll probably get one for him.
So i took the time to explain to my son the basics of detecting... keeping in mind his limitations especially in the verbal sens. So he swings the coil as i hold his arm and guide him all the way. After a while, he could pin-point pretty mutch on his own and sometimes he'd go digging with his hands, sometimes he would use the little basket i improvised as a light sand scoop.
All in all, he was pretty pleased when he dug himself and found the coin or the dinkies himself. He still has a little more training to do before he can do it on his own, but he'll catch up, i'm pretty sure of that. Of course, i'll have to get him a better sand scoop, but i hope the day isn't too far as I'll be in the water and he will be on the shore digging stuff by his onw. Who knows, one day i could get out of the water empty handed and he'd have a ring or two in his poutch
He usually only walked along either in the water on on the beach while i detected, but i'd feel mutch more happy if he could do something usefull while i enjoy this so rewarding hobby!
By the way, i think my son got his first glimps at silver... found a small chain clasp in the sand. Not stamped, but it's not always is !
So got to find a light sand scoop and get back in the sand boxes for more practice !!! Once we got home, we cleaned and looked at the finds and my son seems pretty pround of his work !
