Been hunting around some baseball fields with some luck lately. Here's what I've been finding. The switch from aluminum cans to plastic is coming on pretty strong in my area. After cleaning out the tabs, makes for nicer hunts. Things seem to run in cycles for me. Some yrs it's the year of lost keys. Than its the matchbox cars, this year has been the year of the washers. Seems like I get a couple every time out. Now a few fields I've hunted had this going on. Moved in after the tournament's, finding nice amount of coins, but most have been 2-4 inches deep. Few new drops. Now most machines on the market can reach down that deep. So what's happening here? Someone just hunting the toppers, not digging. Or what? Just can't figure how shallow coins are there, but fresh drops are very few. Anyway, I hit a little area in a park with the Inferno. Kind of tickles me. Found 16 nickels, 2 dimes and just one quarter. Not hard to figure out what happened here. Somebody isn't digging iffy signals. Those 16 nickels, raised my nickel finds to 400 this year. 500 is my goal.

Seems the same here Dancer. Head out to a place that should have fresh drops and they're scarce. But coins in the 2 to 4 range are the ones making up much of the goodie pile. Not sure why this is either:shrug: 100 nickels to go, that's excellent:clapping: and I look forward to reading that 500th nickel post:biggrin:

Same here...purchasing habits have changed I think..about the only freshies I find are in totlots...nearly all of my sportsfield/park clad is at the depths you suggest, seems to have been heavily dropped from the mid-80's up until about 2008...meaning it will all be gone soon with clad grabbers like us working it for old glory!

Yeah, that nickel challenge of yours is a very cool goal to accomplish! We are pulling for you!

I think fewer and fewer people are actually carrying change in their pockets. I know I don't anymore. Most pay for even small items with a debit or credit card.

It would be interesting to go to one of the sporting events and hang around when the game is over...you might see someone "specking" (or maybe more than one)...they might not get everythign that has been dropped, but they would get a fair bit, enough anyway to make a difference when someone comes along with a detector. Years ago, I went to a local netball area, early in the morning. There was a woman there with about 5 (or more) young children, all in line, about a yard apart, all walking very slowly to spot and retreive anything valuable.....metal detector not needed.
