Hello I'm new hear, (First post) I use a DFX . My question is this, Iwent to an elementary until 1969 I also had five siblings go to the same school before me. I have been hunting this school now on three different occasions. So far I have found one 1945 war nickel, about five 1960s nickles but dimes and quarters are all 1973 and newer. I have also found two cheep rings, cheep earrings, pieces of copper, cheep pennants, pull tabs, chunks of aluminum cans etc. This school has been there for many decades but no Wheaties or silver dimes or quarters? It is a noisy area (high voltage lines and airport traffic). I have been using coin/jewelery program keeping the AC sensitivity at 68 and Preamp Gain at 3. Is there anything else I can do to pull some of the older coins out? Thanks for your help PS I have only been metal detecting for three weeks. firedup

Are you using headphones? If it is real noisey try turning you Ac down to about 65 and try that, you also might want to turn the the preamp to 2. If you are in a lot of trash and are using the stock coil you may want to consider and smaller coil. also go to DFX classroom forum you can find it by clicking on forum index at the top of this page. Hang in there those wheats and silver is there just keep swinging and adjusting. HH Jim in Bama

Schools can be very productive, there is no doubt. Keep in mind, however, that most people new to the hobby detect the schools first. I rarely find any older coins at schools, although with the DFX you may find the deeper ones. I would crank it up to about 73 on the AC if you can keep it stable. Over the 30 or so years that the hobby has been popular these spots have been well hit. It is rare to see posts on the forums with old coins found on school lots. You can, however, expect to find jewelry.

I have never actually seen anyone detecting my local school, but my detecting experience tells me otherwise.

INMO, if it is older coins you are looking for, do a little research. Try to identify the old swimming hole or home site that is now a wooded "green acres" spot. I got frustrated detecting in parks and schools, so now I think outside the box, and it has paid off.

As stated lots of people hit the schools, but I have a suggestion.. Can you hunt the street easements there? If you can (I always also ask the homeowner who's house it is in front of also) detect them down the street on the way to the school especially the corners where the students cross, bus stop ect.. Found some nice items down from the school where the kids walk..
