I posted this as a reply to Bill(WI) on the Explorer Class forum but it is buried too far down to get an answer. Maybe someone here can give Bill and I some tips on how to solve this problem.

Bill, I have a super trashy site next to a historical district and lake here in Florida. The trash is so thick I probably get 2 or 3 nulls on every swing of the coil with my coin pattern. I'm really having trouble with buried aluminum cans and some bottle caps giving me a silver coin indication at digital 28 and far right side on smartfind. Also, my depth meter with the X-8 coil always shows targets deeper than they really are. The only way I have been able to avoid digging this trash is to try to determine size in the pinpoint mode and often, even a crushed can looks like a good signal. If anyone has a clue how to deal with these trash items, please let us know.

I'm still learning but I've found by lifting the coil up and still get a signal at 2-3" off the ground for a deep target it is a can. Also I've found cans to read at 30 and 31 I think it depends how thay are crushed. I still dig them sometimes though as they can still trick me from time to time. As to the X8 the depth meter is off by about 30% 8" deep targets register at about 12" on the meter 6"T at about 9"M, 3"T at about 5". I don't own a 8" but this is what others have stated.

Thanks, Miles. I'll try the lifting technique a bit more often. WW

Pinpoint mode should help you to determine the size of the target (edge to edge) and it should also sound off way louder than any common coin will. Now if you are in a site that potentially may have silver dollars laying around at 2 inches then you better dig all silver signals. Otherwise you can pretty much judge size and mass by the pinpoint mode. You just going to have to dig a few coins and cans paying attention to the pinpoint sounds to be familiar with how each one sounds in pinpoint mode to tell the difference. Also, I find that the X-8 generally reports dime size targets to be about 25% deeper than they really are.

While hunting the other day, I was using the 8in Sunray coil. On smaller targets it pinpoints great, but on crushed cans I have found the Pinpointing to be very erratic because of the smaller coil and the can passing on the sides of the coil as well as the center. I have done what others suggested and raised the coil far enough to get a better Idea what I have and raising the coil will give you an idea of the size of the target.
I have collected several of the aluminum screw caps and have concentrated on where they show on the screen and exact sounds. It has helped me determine better if I find one in the ground.
I will be hunting this weekend more and will post the results.
Thanks to everyone for the great responses it has helped this newbie.
Bill(WI) Sorry for the long post.
