found a coin that is dated 1918 with a soldier down on a knee firing a rifle.
words: Service With The American Army In France : around the front
back has the eagle and says: Trust In The Lord And Keep Your Powder Dry:

Can anybody help figure this one out?

This one appeared on Ebay recently and sold for $50. No helpful description about origin.

A similar one appears at this link, about half-way down the page.

>>This is a 1921 Bronze Medallion commemorating the National Encampment of the National Guard.

There is a raised inscription on the back of the medal "Trust in the Lord and Keep Your Powder Dry" with a very aggressive eagle, glory of 48 stars, shied and stand of arms and standards.<

In the Heritage Metals and Token Auction catalogue, September 2007, there is alos a description of another similar medal:
(Circa 1917) T. Elder Army Life Medal MS61 NGC Brass.
Obverse: US soldier in desert kneels to aim at target with rifle. Reverse: patriotic emblems include eagle, flags, and shield. Legends: In memory of my army life on the Mexican border; trust in the Lord and keep your powder dry.

I dunno if any of this helps or not. Neat find, Tim, thanks for posting!

...with no pic but a description:
Obverse Legend IOWA NATIONAL GUARD . MEXICAN BORDER SERVICE .
Obverse Type soldier stg.l. with rifle; eagle stg.l. on shield with arrows and laurel branch

Info: This medal, possibly privately funded, was awarded to enlisted men and officers of Iowa National Guard who served on Mexican border, 1916-1917, for service. r/w/b/g/b/w/r, 1.1.1.29.1.1.1mm

With their similarities in design, I'm wondering if possibly all of these type medals were National Guard issue?

One things for sure, that's a real nice find.
