Cannonball mystery

We found what appears to be a 18 lb. cannonball. Actually, it has been sitting in our back yard for over 20 years now. It has an inscription above the "18", but we are having trouble reading it due to rust and wear.
It appears to end in "...YS" and is about 11 letters total. Any ideas on what these letters might signify? Also, the area on the opposite side of the ball appears to be a concrete patch of about 1" diameter. Any ideas about it?
