Cannonball find

Larry (IL)

Well-known member
was my first and second thoughts, but after a club member did some research, it turned out to be a shot put............:veryangry: ..........  I had never seen an adjustable weight shot put before and that sure looked like a fuse in a cannonball to me. 16 lbs = 7.26 Kilograms and the diameter is 110mm as the numbers indicate.

Still though there is a story to tell....... We camped out in Galesburg IL. at Lake Story and a lot of activity was going on last weekend including an 1840 and before rondevu and a Civil War re-enactment of the battle of Shiloh. All of us had a great time, but before I knew that my find was a shot put, I took the find over to a Civil War re-enactor with a cannon and asked for his expertise in identifying my "cannonball". He did not have any idea what it was but he did remind me that a cannonball with a fuse intact was very dangerous to handle. (As we all know) As he was looking closely at the markings, his cell phone rang that was in his shirt pocket.................. he really did have to leave shortly afterwords for about 10 minutes and I really do think it had something to do about a change of clothing.

Huh..never thought someone would find one of those. Not sure it would even fit in my pouch.

Looks like it was an entertaining find though.

Great story Larry. I would have thought the same thing. :heh:

Hey did you find the chain and shackles to go with it? Interesting talk piece Larry. Better to find it rather than get hit by it.Fun stuff.
