cannon balls

I remember reading on one of the forums some time back on how to treat dug relics such as cannon balls. I think you soaked them in oil and then burned them? Does anyone remember how this process is done? Thanks.

I recall reading that some people have heated up iron artifacts and then plunged them in used motor oil or fresh motor oil. I have heated some smaller bits (horse shoes and hinges) on the stove to drive out any water and then sealed them with a furniture oil, it seems to seal them up.

If you have any indication that your shot is anything but solid iron I would not even bring it in the house yet alone heat it up in a fire or oven.

Just my 2 cents worth. 1.7cents in your money.
