:canadaflag:noticed when visiting metal detecting forums

Visit , respond and post on about 15 sites regularly. Have noticed though that it seems that the same hard core group is keeping many a forum active......time to participate folks and share your finds, views , photos and encouragement!

We got 2 feet of snow in the woods, 2 feet of ice on the lake... The southern folk should be able to cheer us up!! :hot:

There usually is a small core that keeps the forums chugging along in both good and bad times. A lot of these posters are the top 10% who really live- sleep - work around the wonderful hobby. They have been around for a long time. A lot f others join in, then fade out. That's how it has worked here on Findmall for as far back as I remember.

Things have also improved. Many years ago, if you were a coin hunter, you were ostracized as a second class hunter. Forum fights were common. Banning posters was also quite common. Brand users was also an issue. There were constant fights as to "mine is better then yours." So....forum operators began setting up sub forums, such as coin hunting, water hunting and, relic hunting along with different brand forums. That's why, when a comparison between 2 different brands starts op on a brand specific forum, it is quickly deleted or moved to a different forum.

I personally have witnessed some very good forums get totally annihilated and shut down in a very short time due to various fights. But......we just don't see very much of that type of behavior any more. Most posters agree that any metal detector in the hands of a proficient user will do fairly well. And, we tend to support each other a lot more today. :)

One great thing about the hobby is the friendly folks that are willing to assist and to share their stories. We all have our favorite brand of detectors and our own preference for detecting but I notice that on this forum people have a sense of comeraderia that transcends "brand".

Seems that once some of us get past the learning curve of the first few years, and see forums politics, you get over some stuff. I remember feeling like I was being mocked, and well I was actually, for starting out with my ACE 250 and finding clad. One guy in particular that regularly dug old coins on the east coast was really snide. But I later realized that you can only find what is in your region and take pleasure in that. I ended up finding some rare 1700's fur trade silver fairly early in the hobby, which can be quite ironic at times. Bottom line though, keep it simple, enjoy the time out for its various pleasures, and if you pop a neat find, its icing on the cake.

I don't see how you manage 15 forums, Leslie. More power to you. I try to visit about 4 but haven't been posting since I'm not getting out much, but it sure helps to check the library a couple times a week and see what others are finding to stay motivated. John, we have some pretty good forums and I have seen some members want to get personal over disagreements, but most work it out without moderator having to get involved. Lots of experience on these forums and have learned quite a bit from more experience members and appreciate their help.

Hello All. I am new here and am a member of many forums but very seldom post anything. Majority of forums are what John Edmonton and Upnorth described and I find photography forums are the worst. I don't really find the need to be actively asking questions as most of the answers I am looking for are already in the forum. Between here and the another forum there is one pile of good "in the Field" information. Being in Nova Scotia I tend to follow you guys as it is more relevant to my situation.SNOW! As far as posting pictures , well I have been thinking about changing my name legally to Pull tab Paul so you know what I find, (anyone want a clock made with pull tabs? How about an custom length pull tab chain with a 10" bottle top Medallion ?) I also don't feel any information I have would be something you all don't already know so I sit here and read and learn and enjoy the post and envy the finds :)...
Thanks!

What annoys me the most is not being worshiped as the icon that my ego tells me I am. I mean really, get with it people....... Mr. Trump and I accept donations to our Pay Pal accounts.

Speaking for the silent or near silent members on Findmall. First respect to all the great detectorist that post amazing finds and give tips from their hard earned knowledge, and experiences. The photos of silver and jewelry are encouraging and inspiring for those of us that read them. Being more of a rotten zincolins Finder and can slaw expert speaking for me it is sometimes hard to compare my clad finds and want to post them. The nice finds posted keep me going out hoping to find a worthy item to post. I did post my first 925 ring and I'm hoping for more good finds in my future. Still learning and hoping for a break through event where the better finds show up.
[Fresh water fishing and dirt fishing are my hobbies and I spend some time on both blogs and read Both blogs daily. I type too slow to do more. Lol On the fishing blog I participate some anglers just do better catching trophy fish or large numbers and thankfully share their knowledge and success to those of us learning from the information. I'm not likely to enter in on a trophy bass posting with a picture of my personal best bass that does not compare at all. I enjoy the posts and give a comment of nice catch. A fishing comparison, I think is no Joe average fisherman will tell Kevin Van Dam many time champion how to bass fish. I try to practice listen and not talk so much when an expert talks and learn something.
I have shared photos online of my good fish, and give an opinions or advice when I feel I can share help for those struggling newbes needing help and encouragement.
I know for me seeing Findmall years back got me to buy my first good detector and get into a hobby the brings a smile on my face every time I pull a clad quarter from the ground. The excitement of my best find ever has diminished a little but not all that much. Thanks to all posters for sharing those great finds you keep the rest of us silent and nearly silent readers going out to hunting for our best find ever.
You can be assured when that good find show up For me a photo and post will be made and a thank you to all the regular posters that showed the way to my best find ever. :clapping:

I find clad and common junk and I am proud of it,. Amongst the trash I find-- some gold jewelry, some silver jewelry.
Only two silver coins in the past 6 years.
I live in a city if hard core detectorists that have hit this city hard for the past 40 years.
I get a kick out of trying, playing with different detectors........................just like when I am fishing, not always about the catch, its about playing
with different equipment and trying out new techniques that may catch the fish.

Here's some of my trash

Big city near me. Has lots of tempting parks playgrounds etc. Be surprised if hunted hard. Trouble is watching the news, good chance of running into some bad people around there. How do you work around this? Or no problem where your at.

Yep I wish there was more input coming across. Never know how a short post can turn into a tip.

Got my Ace250 for Christmas and am having a lot of fun, but I am not sure of the procedure for starting a search. I hear a lot about ground balancing and I am not sure if I have to balance the 250 and the procedure. What I have been doing is powering the unit up and holding it near the ground. I press the pinpoint button, and If I get feed back I reduce the sensitivity until the hum goes away. Then begin searching. Any thoughts or feedback from the pros? I have been finding enough coins and other things to make it fun.

With the 250, I believe you just have to have the coil a few inches above the ground when you turn it on. Sounds like you got the idea on reducing the sensitivity til it's quiet. Good luck and HH!

Ya know Les, I think in the past there might have been more individuals who made things interesting. Someone would post something, and the opinions would start cropping up. Now all over I see some informative, comic, or posts with good questions just die out there. People read them so it's not like there's no one there. Some forums keep posts at the top of the page for years. Than when you scroll down half the page is gone. I don't know if it's boredom, political correctness, or what.
Here's a thought, Maybe the guys reading never bothered to sign up for a password and membership so they can post. ??
Got to be a reason for a good post to go without comment.

I read all the posts, but unless there is something I can help on, or a comment I can pounce on  , I feel there is nothing for me to add. Does that make me a helpful lurker???

.

I detect the ''murder capital of Canada'', and in some of the scruff areas usually. Sometimes I will carry one of those steel collapsible batons in my pouch, and often detect with one muff off. I am always scanning my surroundings. I even had a young kid ride by on his bike and lip me off once, I looked over and people on the porch were laughing. Just a ghetto hole neighbourhood. If I get too spooked I leave, every day is different. Sometimes I think the younger ones are the worst. If I see a group coming I look for an exit.

Not a problem in the city I live.
Keeps your eyes and ears open and a way to exit an area if you think trouble is brewing.
Just remember, coils hurt, if your able to swing it as a last resort, digger tools can be menacing as well.
Predators can smell fear and will size you up to see if your worthy.............

Detected one Buffalo, NY park just across the street from a corner store one early Sunday morning where a fair skinned person would stand out.
But 20 years earlier we were pulling Barber coins and Indian head pennies out of. Neighborhood changed since then. My wife was freaking out
as the the store was being looted by neighbor hood people, even by those that lived a few houses away. Told my wife just detect, mind your own business
and everything will be fine....cops will be here shortly, store alarm went off................

I love these photos. They sort of say it all about your attitude. I hope some day you find some virgin ground with a load of silver coins in it. You've earned it.
