Can your CTX standard coil detect a lead airgun pellet? Mine can't

So I had some friends wanting to know how metal detectors work and showed them how my CTX picked up various metal objects by laying them on the surface of the ground. Then one of them put down a lead pellet from an airgun and my CTX could not pick it up at all. Nothing. Is this normal? Or do I have a defective coil?

Hm, don't have any lying around to test, I have found lots of 22 cartridges, and small pieces of lead from slugs, and fired 22 bullets. But a bb is what your talking about right? Perhaps if you cranked up the sensitivity? I am glad I don't hear them when I detect the farms and fields because I would never get anywhere.

I like GK Man have dug plenty of 22 bullets and some were deep while relic hunting. Your machine should pick it up unless your sensitivity is too high or the pellet falls into whatever discrimination you may have programed. If you are picking up the other targets your coil is OK. My experience with bad coils and I have only had a couple in 35+ years go bad but you will know it or at least I did. A crack allowing moisture in will get your attention. Push your pin-point button and go over that pellet that should get a response. HH :minelab:

modern BB's are steel with a copper plating so you are probably discriminating out the steel... try an open screen and see if you hear the tiny low blip of the BB..

This morning, I got a sweet 12-44 signal at 10 inches and dug thru a lot of gravel and dry crusty dirt thinking that I had a silver dime or quarter. Finally reached the target and it turned out to be a very thin piece of rusted wire about a half inch long. IMHP, you have a bad coil or other problem with your detector.

I have found a few, less than an inch deep but was showing a deeper signal, one was in a small chunk of wood, all in the woods, and they looked as if they were in the ground for a while, all were .177 cal

What settings have you used to try this?

Have you tried this in the CTX3030's on-board default Relic settings or a setting without any discrimination at all first?

I find fragments of brass percussion caps and even whole ones are hard to pick up with most machines. Relic mode, smooth tones, 50 C0, open screen first. Should be no problem, sensitivity high as you can and stable and play with gain. Happy hunting.
