Can you recommend a coil for the Cortes.

I have a Tejon and love the 5.75 HOT coil with it but i'm not sure which coil would be best for the Cortes. I think the stock coil is a bit heavy. I see they offer a 5.75 and a 7 in DD and concentric. I am not sure which would be the best fit. I'll probably end up with a 4, 5.75, and a 7 anyway but... which one do you recommend?
I'll be using it mostly in urban settings. Old homesites, vacant lots, parks, etc. For coins and relics.

Thanks,

Julien

They offer a DD in a 7". Maybe I should go with the 7" WS and a 4" concentric... thoughts?

Thanks,

J

[size=medium]Just go for the new 5

I've used DD coils almost exclusively for the last ten years or so and the narrow field of a DD is great for slicing out signals from good targets next to Iron.

If you ever feel really brave, and want to find coins and rings you never knew were there, buy that big uMax 12x10 concentric coil.

It's heavy I know but it will pull coins you never dreamed were there.

I've been using this coil on the Silver uMax and digging 100+ year old coins out of "hunted out" sites.

After you clean out your sites with the little coils, try the 12x10 just for the heck of it. You'll be shocked!

That wouldn't have crossed my mind. The only big coil I ever bought was an S-12 for my SovereignGT, used it twice, need to sell it...

Most of my extra coils are smaller. I just need to decide whether to get to DD or concentric first. I think my 5.75 Tejon coil is concentric because it is black wtih no label or graphics. I don't know if I will gain much, as far as working in trash, by going with the 7" DD. So I am thinking about the 5.75 concentric for starters but I want both of them...

How does that big coil do in trashy areas?

Thanks,

Julien

Why? What do you think the C has over the DD 5.75?

Thanks,

J

How do you think the depth of the two compare? Between the 5.75 DD and 5.75 concentric? I do have a lot of places wit hhigh mineralization and I read on the Tesoro site that the DD is good in iron.

Thanks,

J

The Cortes I have on the way will have the 5.75 concentric in addition to the stock coil. I thought about the 4 inch, just seems maybe a bit to small to start out, so I went with the 5.75. I wish the 5.75 concentric and 5.75 widescan I have for my Tejon and Cibola would work, but I guess the HOT technology coils don't go with the Cortes.
Maybe later if I read enough to put another twist to the noggin, I'll think about the 10x12, and possibly the 4 inch.
For now it just seems like there is not must difference between the 4 and 5.75 inch coil. So I went for the 5.75 because I'm used to that size on the Tejon and Cibola and I'm happy with them. Another though I had was the 5.75 worked well for me in trash, and I'm hesitant on loosing a little more depth if I went for the 4 inch.
And the dealer who I'm getting the Cortes from, said if he was to choose one smaller coil, for the type of hunting that I do, he would choose the 5.75 (heck - good enough for me) - so I'm going for the 5.75 and will see what happens sometime in the future.
I got some of those credit card size wallet magnifiers and Oxyride batteries. I didn't want anything slowing me down the moment I complete assembly. Maybe I'll also be wearing headphones and will assemble it in the backyard standing among coins and other various targets.

How do you compare the 5.75 DD to the 5.75 concentric that you have for the Tejon? I think the 5.75 Tejon coil I have must be concentric because it is black with no graphics like on the website, but i'm not sure. Since you have both, what do you think? What are the strength/weakness of the two?

I guess they only offer a concentric 5.75 for the Cortes.

That is probably what I will start with. I'm thinking that a 7 or 8 DD would be a nice addition too.

Thanks,

J

When I use the 5.75, I usually start with the concentric. If the ground is not too bad, it seems to run more stable.
If the ground is highly mineralized, then I switch to the widescan to help cut in for depth.
Normally, 'm not sure but the concentric seems to get just a tad bit deeper. And due to the cone matrix, you have to overlap more on the sweeps.
The concentric pinpoints dead center as expected. I usually sweep at least again in an X to visualize the target in the ground so either coil works for me. Then I dig, (may probe first depending on where I'm digging), and may use one of my hand held electronic pinpointers. The sweet thing with machines like the Cibola, is the target audio is so tightly sharp, I really don't use the pinpoint button feature on the machine.
As far as figuring which coil is which, I just look at the coil (pic).

I haven't used a DD coil on my Cibola of any size yet either but I've used DD coils on my Excalibur and SovereignXS for more than ten years.

Those machines go deep with DD coils so I suspect the Tesoro machines would too.

I used an 8" DD Coin Search coil with my Sov. and it got good depth, especially at saltwater beaches. It was good in trashy areas too but a 7" would be even better I reckon.

I've got a 5.75 on my Cortes and really like it. I get good depth and it is great in high trash areas. Not a whole bunch of depth loss but a little. Sure is easy on the arm.

I Ordered one, thanks!

J

I ordered a 5.75 but I am going to watch for a 7" too. Which 7" do you use? Concentric or DD?

Thanks,

J
