can you nugget hunt with an explorer ?

only if nugets size not smaller pea. explorers not best for small stuff-its will not work--or NEVER will work.

Nope... they just arent affective RAW gold machines. You cant get a peep on a small nugget and thats on the surface. Add the tuff dirt you would be hunting in and you would just be taking your detector for a walk. The Exps are GBed to be very close to salt readings which knocks out most of your smaller targets. Even some of the better machines like the gold bug wont hit very deep out in AZ or Calf. Thats why you pick a spot you know gold was found in do some raking back of the rocks to get as close to the surface as possible.

Hi guys, this is the response from Steve at Kelly Co when I asked a similar question about my Safari. with certain coils to maybe find gold here in OZ. Just a query. (" The Safari is unlikely to detect a gold nugget at all unless it is a very sizable one. This is because to detect for raw gold, which is such a very tiny

piece of very soft metal, you need to have one single higher frequency. The multiple frequencies of the Safari kind of work against each other to try and

hit on that small piece of gold. If you were to get any coil to try and find a nugget with the Safari I think the 4.5 x 7 inch Excelerator DD Coil is as good

choice as you can make. It is an even a better choice than the 8 x 6 SEF coil And that 4.5 x 7 is great for the trashy areas, too, of course.") Hope this helps some.

Like any hobby digging for gold takes the right kind of equipment. Obviously, research and the better equipment you have improves your odds. I have several friends that are retired and dig full time as well as a friend in the national gold society. Having worked with them.... i do mean work, it takes a lot of time and right equipment to see a spec of color. Unless you use one of the very expensive MLs you will be looking for mostly very very shallow targets. Hey.... but as they say even a blind squirrel may find a nut. Youd have better luck with a PI if your out in no where land.... but then you have to have a sample much like air testing coins to know what you are dealing with.

Don't know about gold but my explorer will detect .177 air pistol pellets at about 6in which are very small but only with solid rock underneath.

Since the Exps dont really GB they COMPENSATE for soil they are just factory set to close to small gold. The higher sensitivity the wider the foot print and more sensitive they are to surface targets.... so they do pick up tiny objects like shot gun pellets, bobby pins, earrings, buttons, and the tiniest pieces of copper. If you get in a place with the possibility of a larger nugget you might get lucky. An second hand Gold Bug or MXT defiantly would be a better choice. An explorer would be a good investment as a gold machine. Also a good smaller DD coil is a must for smaller gold because the larger the coil the less sensitive to the size of the target.

I was diggin' BB sized brass rivets from my back yard at 6" with my Explorer II that I just bought used earlier this week...and these very small targets were being partially masked by iron junk. I've gone over the area at least a hundred times over the past 2yrs using a Tesoro Compadre, Fisher F4, Fisher CZ3D and a Fisher ID Edge and none of 'em found these little targets amongst the iron. No nuggets in my area but some air test at low sens. suggest the the Explorer sure will give a good signal with 10k, 14k and 18kt gold rings without any trouble at all..with the right settings.

My XS with 12X10 SEF air tests well on small Alaskan gold nuggets I originally found with a Lobo ST. I have not buried the nuggets in my hot ground to test. I recall an article where a fellow found a multi-ounce nugget using his Explorer in Paradise Valley, AK- while the VLF gold machine users sniffed around for the small stuff! As a treasure hunter I know which I would rather have!
