We found this article whilst detecting on a beach in southport,U.K.

we have found out by Jewllers, that it is BRASS and has a small stamp either, MANUFACTURERS or some kind of number. however it is UNREADABLE. the jewellers seemed excited about the artifact, although it not being jewellry.

MAYBE MARITIME INSTRUMENT COMPONANT.....possibly a pointer.

ANYBODY WITH ANY IDEAS?????????? PLEASE HELP.

thank you for the idea, however, this article is hardly a CM big, far far too small to be a handle for a candle stick holder, i know, as my grand father used to cast candle stick holders and various other brass items. any more ideas?????? bearing in mind that i have been informed that this has been made with great precision.

thankyou again.

Who informed you it was made with great precision and why??? If it was the jeweler, how would he know if he doesn't even know what it is. The piece looks crude to me, not precise.

Dave in NJ

indeed it does look a little crude, i am yet to finish cleaning it up, but definatly far far to small to be a holder of any sort i have uploaded a pic to hopefully show how small it really is.

P.S i never meant for the previous statement to sound snotty in any way, maybe a little frustrared, but not snotty, sorry for the impression.

further more the jeweller meant it was Casted into a precise shape rather than a simple circular hole. with an oval hole, with ridges that make the hole a different size in certain places, suggesting it was part of a mechanism.

I do hope that someone can I.D. this item. Do you think it could have been part of the rigging on a small sail boat, or something to tie a small rope to? Also, I did not think you were being snotty. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

I agree with Kelly that it maybe part of a rigging also you can use a small peg to place it in the hole.

i have more information. inside the the the large hole are the letters N P. this do not looked stamped but also they do not look engraved.

i found this out by (shameful to say) srubbing around the suggested area by the jeweller., in which in his opinion said there was a marking. may this shed light on what it may be?????

i know i am persistant, but it just frustrates me not knowing. thank you all for your replies.

possibly a part of an old wind-up clock mechanisim??

well it turns out that it may be part of (more than likley) a stair rod.

now is it worth keeping????

what does A.P mean on the inside?????

and how old could it be???????

if anybody could help with these q's ,much appreciated.
