Can the Vaquero get those Deep Silver coins?

MonsterTab

New member
I am looking to find a metal detector, will mostly be hunting old farm houses and old parks. I am interested in Silver Coins primarily. Can the Vaquero find deep silver? What if I also upgraded to the 10x12 coil? This MD interests me quite a bit because I dont care about the VDI or depth finder yadda yadda ya, just want something that will get out there and do the job, but I am assuming to find silver Im probably looking 8-10" on a lot of coins. Need to know this MD can do that, with or without the upgraded coil.

MonsterTab,

First off, welcome to the forum. Second.....I don't have any experience with the Vaquero, but I will tell you this, it takes experienced ears to tell whether you have a deep target under your coil. The deepest coin I have found with a Tesoro was abot 8" deep and it was a Barber Quarter found with a Toltec ll. Most of the deeper coins run about 5" to 8" deep in my ground anything from mercury dimes to seated libertys. I had an Explorer for awhile and it was a deeeep detector, just could'nt stand the music it was playing, different strokes for different folks. Then I had a CZ5 for awhile, it was deep detector, but it was too noisy in the iron. I believe that most older coins and relics are hiding in and around nails and smaller ferrous junk and most Tesoros excell in this situation. My wife runs a DeLeon and it has respectable depth, it is our newest Tesoro and I like it alot as I get to play with it once in awhile. It has the VCO all-metal mode like most "modern" Tesoros, not too crazy about that style of all-metal operation. I'm sure someone will chime in with their experience with the V.

Hi Monster Tab, I mostly use a Tejon which is really deep on buttons and coins but I will tell you that I saw my diggin Buddy dig the deepest silver coin I ever saw dug with his Vaq, with 9x8 stock coil, in some pretty trashy(nail mostly)ground. Coin was a silver 18??something dime smoothed and carved on one side, very thin "love token', well worn to the point of only partially readable. I watched him dig it. It took awhile and we did not measure it, I think probably because we both were in shock as to it being so deep. I have dug some deep buttons and coins with my T but told him then and there there would be no way I would hit with my T, such small thin silver as what I watched him dig. Get all the input you can though and don't just go on what I am saying. Also all the yadda yadda you are not interested in you might consider applying some of to the big ole 10X12 coil. Since you plan to mostly hunt old farm houses(nail trashy) and old parks(you name it trashy) you would be better going with 5.75" Con. Coil for those especially trashy spots, and there will be some for sure.Put your $ where you will be digging more often..HH,Charlie

I have a Vaquero, but can't answer your question directly. It can go deep, that's for sure. The manual ground balance can really help you get the best depth and super-tuning your detector (turning threshold and sensitivity all the way up to where you can get it without it chattering) can get you a little added depth. Only reason I can't answer directly is that I haven't really been to any places where silver is that deep that I know of.
I'm sure if its there, it will find it. I have been trying to ask about the 10x12 coils myself and haven't had much luck on answers

Hey there Tab.

Well I own a V and can tell you... With the stock coil and the detector power balanced and super tuned I hit a barber half at a measured 11". That's just one of many silver I've gotten with it but that was the deepest. Listen...Yes it hit that coin at a crazy depth but don't let that be the only reason you choose the Vaquero. It's tough, light, has a ton of accessory coils for hitting places with a specific need for them and also has the best warranty in the business backing it up should the need arise. You have many vids to teach you how to use it and help you understand what it's saying to you. You have the best fan club in the forums cheering you on and helping advise you as you and your Vaquero bring back find after find. Like you I hunt those farms and fields and old parks I also hunt the woods...Hillsides so steep you have to hang on to saplings to balance yourself enough to swing. I'm telling you.. I've used a zillion other detectors from all brands and have been detecting for decades and this is my main machine, the one I wont get rid of as it does all I need it to do... and then some. You can't go wrong with a Vaquero.

I hope this helps and even if you were to choose something else....Welcome to the hobby and welcome to the family.

Happy Hunting

Thank you for the reply, I def have considered its other strengths. I have looked at several MDs, including the more expensive options and it seemed that the main thing I was paying for over this was the screen. The Vaquero seemed as good or better in every other comparison, except I needed to know depth on Silver. I wanted to make sure that the machine I bought would hit a silver quarter if I waved over it. I was assuming to have a MD that could hit silver coins it would probably need to be able to hunt in the 8" range.

I will be placing an order this afternoon and look forward to joining the Tesoro Family. :D

That silver half was for sure a nice deep find (congrats), but that size coin is not the norm but the exception. I think hitting the smaller coins should be the way you gauge a detector. I don't have Vaquero but I do have the Tejon with the stock 9x8 coil and I was hitting a Indian head penny at 8" in my brothers brothers test garden. The smaller 5.75 coil would hit it but not to the level that I would for sure dig it.

Tab I can't wait till we start seeing the pics of your finds.

The Vaquero has its own language that you'll spend hours figuring out....It's all part of the ritual between you and your new friend. It's a simple detector that gives you a ton of info. And you are right about paying for the screens. Listen...I'd rather spend less on something that is as deep or deeper than those detectors that cost twice as much.....All screens do is talk you out of doing what you got the detector for in the first place....Digging. So unless you go up to three times the price of the V most TID detectors are not accurate at depth so what's the use in having one? Once you spend some time getting to know your V you will be able to be pretty accurate on depth and ID...You'll see....You've made a great decision and again welcome to the Tesoro family

Now WV...You are correct on that size coin being the exception. I've found silver from Halves to Half dimes, Large cents to IH's and many buttons and brass whatzits. No issues with anything as the detector screams DIG IT. As far as using the 5.75....If you have that coil on..it's because of wanting to slip between the trash to find things that would be masked by the stock coil or bigger. You shouldn't put that coil on and expect the same depth...Not realistic. As far as being able to hit things in a test bed...unless that bed has been buried for years and years so a halo can form around the copper you may as well toss those results to the wind....but I would say that 8inches on an indian head that hasn't been buried very long is very respectable. The fact that you got a nice strong signal speaks highly of the power of the Tejon and if you got a iffy signal with the 5.75 then I'd be willing to bet if the disc was turned down and it was super tuned and power balanced it would have sang a song of dig me quite clearly.

The test garden has been there for something over 2 years. The reason I was testing the Tejon with both coils was to see just how deep the 5.75 coil would go because of my plan to hunt a trashy area and in the cleaner areas around the trashy areas the silver has been running between 5" and 6". So I run the little coil over his 6" coins and it hit all of them pretty hard, then I took it over to the 8" coins just see what it would do and I got a little bit of a hit. Then while I was there I thought I would try the stock 9x8 coil and it hit everything pretty hard up to the IH at 8", that was his deepest and smallest coin in his test garden.

Now I am interested in what you call super tuned and power balanced. Could you explain a little more in detail what is and how to do this tune up. You may want to start a new post we are getting off track from the original Vaquero question. I would have said send me a PM but there may be others out there that would like to know how to get the most out of their machine.

Thanks Ron in WV

My understanding "Super tuned" means sensitivity as high as you can get without chirping and then bringing the threshold up to around the 3 oclock position which makes those normally real quiet deeper hits really stand out. This is what I have gotten out of videos, I will have a much better opinion of this next week. :twodetecting:

Hi MonsterTab
The Vaquero will go deep, very deep. I've owned mine now for more then 2 years and have found coins to 8 inches no problem. In SuperTune, which I rarely use, down to 10. My findings are, 95% of all the coins I found were within 5 - 6 inches in the parks and fields I hunt. For the money, the Vaquero and Outlaw are the two best detectors on the market, with the Outlaw edging out the "V" just a bit due to its disc and extra coils which makes it the most adaptable MD I own. Some advice, if you buy an Outlaw, Vaquero or Cibola, make sure you also buy a good shovel.

Mike 5853...You hunt Parks and fields, and your advice is to buy a good shovel...???????????????????? Do you use a shovel in your parks????????????

KVM2, If you have watched any of Mike5853's videos on Youtube you would know he is a responsible treausre hunter and would never pack a shovel in a park. What he meant was to make sure you have a good quality digger cause you will need it with these detectors.

my vaquero is impossible to ground balance . don't know why. also could not get tesoro compadre or goldensabre to pick up on this 14kt gold chain. heres video.

I have to say you have me scratching my head unless this is a joke.

All those detectors in all metal should scream over that. The V's ground balance is another issue all together.

Hmmmm.

I'm at a loss but I didn't see the V in the video and from "everything I've learned to be true" as far as the freq of the detector the one that should pick that up
the best would be the V with its 14kHz freq. Now I know the Compadre is tuned to find rings and such but is still limited by the freq of the detector which is only slightly lower than the V's at 12kHz.
Understand I don't mean Limited in a bad way at all as we all know what the little beast can do.

Something is missing here as far as info yet at the moment you have me baffled.

Thanks for posting that video...Do appreciate the time and effort you put into that to pose the question to us.

Steve you wanna chime in on the Compadre side of this... Heck anyone?

I'll be following this one with interest.

I too, am baffled, at these results.
I can tell you that I used to hunt in the Birmingham Al. area and there were some sites that were so mineralized that my Vaq would not GB, either, but not at every site.
Is this a problem at several different areas, or did you try to balance it at just one?

As far as the Compadre, I have one with the 7" coil, (should not matter), and the sense is turned up internally to max, (again, this should not matter), and I could hit this very tiny clasp on this much thinner chain with no problem.

All three detectors should be able to find something as big as the chain in your video, the clasp at least, with no problem.

Regarding shovels..Let's ban that word, and use back hoe..Too many newbies see shovel by someone who has posted a lot, and BINGO, a shovel is what I need..So kids if you are going to give advice about deep digging , make sure they have a back hoe on tap...On the other hand, it would just be the day I went to my favorite(non productive ) park, and saw a back hoe cruising with a big TESORO MEANS TREASURE banner on it... By the way , take a shovel and a digging knife side by side.. Ask someone which would get coins out of the ground the fastest.?. Then, which will do the most damage.?.And, which tool should be banned from parks? And, how many stories have you read of shovel diggers in parks...You wanna dig deep, get a Tesoro and a BACK HOE...

Really? Why are you hijacking this thread over the word "shovel". You have too much time on your hands .

That is one of the strangest vid's I have seen. There has got to be an 'unknown' in there someplace. It would be interested to see the poster re-do the video using a 3rd, non Tesoro detector. Really curious.
