I left him saying that he paid me 120 for my service in the editing. I could have taken that part out. But I'm proud of what I do. I didn't ask for 120 but I'm sure not going to turn down any reward if offered. In reality I spent over 3 hours on the hunt including my drive time. I mean this equipment isn't cheap. Fuel isn't either. What about a new coil? What about a new machine? I know there are some that wouldn't accepted the money and that's OK. I don't see how accepting money for a professional detecting service is detrimental to the hobby? That's just how I roll.. What do you say?

I wouldn't feel too guilty about it, he was more than happy to hand you the money and he even tipped you for it. Dont forget there are many who offer a ring finding as a service and charge as an extra way to boost their income. And as you say fuel is not cheap, neither is your time and it took 3 hours to find.

Lots of people turn a hobby into a way to make some extra cash. Why not detecting. It's still a search. You make people happy. They give you what they want. Take the cash with a smile. It beats digging zincs all day.

Detrimental to the hobby?

Perhaps the tv shows may be somewhat detrimental to the hobby. Other than that, when an area is closed to detecting or you are thrown out of a park it is usually just one person's ignorant perception.
Noone is going to remember the local newspaper article about a guy returning a class ring. Get real.

Great job man !!!!

I've had two successful ring recoveries so far this year. It just so happens that both were for friends of my wife, so they were done as honey-do favors. Although neither offered a reward, both paid off: I gained permission to hunt two new properties and I got a lead on another. I'll take that over cash any day! Great job on your recovery. I might have to hit you up for some pointers if I land two or three more rings in my area and word starts to spread. HH!

Outstanding job khouse! As far as feeling guilty by accepting money for doing it?.., my guess is, HE would feel guilty if you hadn't. This way nobody feels guilty - both parties go away feeling like winners because indeed.. both have! :beers:
