i dont know much about key dates for coins. if one seems old enough i just ask my dad what he thinks. can anybody please shed some light on this topic for me. which dates mean silver...whats a merc dime? and any other key dates. sorry for the dumb question but i never really cared too much about it till now..thanx for the help HH :detecting:

I don't know much about dates, but I do know that the name "Mercury Dime" is a misnomer. The picture on the coin is actually a "Flying Liberty" bust, not the Greek god "Mercury". But coin collectors, mder's and the like have been referring to them as "Mercury" dimes for decades, so I guess the name sticks. Sort of like "Hand me a Kleenex" when it is actually a 'facial tissue'!

Go to: http://www.pcgs.com/

They have tons of info on all US coins, including quantity minted, rarity, current values, etc.

A great site!!!

it has all united states minted coins and every year, even shows key dates. I know silver for dimes and up is 1964 and earlier, for nickels its only wartime nickels and those are from 1942-1945, but any half dimes (before nickels) are silver. and the mercury dimes are the dimes before the Roosevelt's.

I agree with norton4 the Offical Red book of US Coins is the best source for all US coins. Should be able to find one at any coin shop or large book store. Cost about 6 or 7 Dollars.

A key date is a very low mintage coin. That makes them more valuable to collectors especially if they are in great condition. Penny key dates are 1909VBDS, and 1914D. Merc Dime key date is the 1916D. Semi key dates are coins that are low mintage but more were minted. Merc dime 1926S for example. This is only a few. find a 1804 Silver dollar and you can retire almost if it is in great condition. Find a Mormon 20.00 gold piece and your sitting on a huge amount of money also.

Good luck in your quest. I have found 3 semi key date dimes that got me 100.00 each. 2 1926S and one 1893O. I also have found a key date penny 1914D which I sold for 176.00 and my favorit which I still have is my 1893CC 10.00 gold piece. They made only 14,000 of them and it is worth a bit over 1000.00 at the moment.
