Can someone explain to me the difference between

Lori

The Eliptical Coils and the DD coils? What are the differences and what makes one better than the other? Also, what difference does the size make?

Thanks a bunch!

Lori, A really brief explanation.
Elliptical coils can be either DD or Concentric so shape doesn't have to be a factor as to the windings in the coil...
Look at a coil as an antenna... The transmit is one winding, the receive is another winding...
With a concentric coil, the windings are in a circle, one inside the other... that cause the coil to "see" everything under it....
With a DD coil, the winding are different, the transmit windings are on one side and the receive windings are on the other side... with this configuration, the coil only "sees"
a straight line down the center of the coil, front to back...
DD advantage is that the detector "sees" less area... Better in trash because of the ability to separate and will also work better in highly mineralized ground.

As a general rule, the larger the coil, there will be added depth but I personally think that it is exaggerated with most advertisements... what the larger coil really does for you is to allow you to cover more ground like at the beach or an open field...

Hope this has helped a little....

Thank you for answering, Richard! I really appreciate it. I was wondering if I should buy another coil for my F75 that I will be getting in the mail soon. I still don't know which one would be the best to get though. I really guess I should try out the coil that comes with it and see if I really need another coil.

I live in WV and not really in coal country but there may have been coal here at one time. I have 6 acres to detect and so far I haven't had much luck :( The house is from 1910 and I haven't found a single silver coin yet! There is a lot next to my house that is my property too and it had a house on it at one time but was torn down. I haven't found anything there yet either. Well, I have found a lot of rusty nails and garbage. I think someone had a garbage pit or 5 there where they burned everything LOL.

Thank you again!!

Lori

Lori, The coil on the F-75 is very capable... Make sure to not swing your coil too fast.... Lay out an imaginery grid in the area of the house and work them right to left, top to bottom... Just be patient, you will find some good coins... Take Care, Richard

Too, if it is trashy, lowering your sensitivity might help some too... too much sens. in trash can be detrimental ...RR

Lori----You got some good advise/info here.----The coil that comes with your F75 (if it's the stock coil) is a DD & as Richard said-is a very good coil.----For heavy trash you may want to consider purchaseing the small coil for it also.--If you "shop" the classifieds or advertise to buy one, sometimes you can find a good buy on the small coil (w/lower shaft).---But try your new F75 with the coil that come with it first and get used to it----and above all, HAVE FUN out there!!!---Hope you find a "ton" of good stuff.-------Del
