Can someone date this?

Found this today. I know it's not in the best shape, but I'll take it. I found it in a 'HUGE" pile of dirt that was excavated from a good square block in downtown Salt Lake City. The early settlers had to bring everything with them back in 1847 so now & then something "old" pops up here. It's hard to make out but I believe it says either "BATTERSEN" or "DATTERSEN". Near the bottom it also reads "ENGLAND". I'm sure thats where it was made. Any help in dating this and any info on what is was used for would greatly be appreciated.
