Well I am getting reunited with my explorer xs.

Got out for a short hunt today and found a cool dog tax license.

I have included what I so far have found out about the tag,
Also found a wheat that I can't get a date off.

The regulation of dogs and cats in Michigan implicates three major issues: licensing and registration of dogs; the regulation of animal control facilities and pet shops; and the ever-present concern of dog bites. The primary statutory vehicle that regulates the licensing requirements for dogs is the The Dog Law of 1919. Under the dog law, it is unlawful for any person to own a dog six months or older unless the dog is licensed. MCL § 287.262. It is also unlawful for a person to own a dog six months or older that does not wear a collar and tag at all times, except when engaged in hunting activities accompanied by his or her owner. MCL § 287.262. A female dog that is in heat may not go beyond her owner’s premises unless properly held on a leash under this section.

About a month ago it shut itself down and it took 5 or 6 times to get it to turn back on. Last week the sound went out.
The cool thing is that minelab seen the post on this forum and contacted me about the issues I was having and set it up for me to return the detector for them to fix.
I use this detector no less then 20 hrs a week for the 3 years I have had it. The mild winters here in Mi has allowed me to do a lot of winter hunting as well.
I hope the turn around isn't taht long. They just received it Friday.

Dog licenses are sold in accordance with the provisions of the Dog Law of 1919 as amended. State law requires that 'on or before March 1 of each year, the owner of a dog shall apply for a dog license for each dog owned or kept

wow, that's pretty cool that you got a Dog Lic for the very first year it was law in your state. That might be worth a few bucks.

I hope you get your MD'er back real soon.

Thanks Mark,
Its kind of fun going back to the explorer for a while a whole lot different style of hunting. Only one number different tones makes me really like what the e-trac has to offer.

Anyway I sent the dog tag off to an expert that had posted on Finds Treasure Forum and here is his what he had to say,

Hello Rick ~ thanks for writing to me!

Yes, that 1919 dog tag is a great find! . . . . I have the newest edition of Dr. William Bones' book US DOG LICENSE TAGS . . . . in there it has 1897 listed as the oldest reported dog tax tag from Lansing Michigan.

The State dog tax law that you are referring to was enacted to cover dogs that where not covered by the city, township, or county agencies.

Even though your tag is in low condition and is damaged is it a a good one. Those "numeral" shaped tags are very popular to dog tag collectors. Pricing dog tags is tricky tho . . . there's no price guides or catalogs for dog tags like there is for coins, currency, stamps, etc. With that said, I'd say your tag is still worth $25 +/- . . . maybe more to a Michigan tag collector if they need that one to fill a hole in the run of Lansing tags.

Yes, some agencies had a different tax year and issued tags from mid year until the next year. Your tag was issued in 1919, but didn't expire until mid 1920.

Thanks again for sharing!
Neil
