Damned if I know! It looks interestin' tho...

Looks like something my Great Great Great grandfather made

I beleave what you have is a candle holder that was used in mines. looks like the cup part is gone but
everything else is as it should be. They stuck the pointy end in a timber to hold it where they needed it.
Cool find you should clean it up and keep it.

Candle holders like this was used up until Carbide Lamps were invented ( date unknown ) sometime in the late 1800's or early 1900's.
One of the reasons the old timer's missed some good gold and silver in there mines, candles didn't put out a lot of light and they could not
afford to use a lot of them at one time. Any open flame in a mine was and is a invitation to a disaster; and there were untold numbers of them.

The candle holder I have is bigger and is shaped different. Looks a bit to small for a candle holder.

I'm just like the President, Congress and Senate. I don't have a clue...! But, I'm not blaming it on the Tea Party or the taxpayers. lol

Well the weird thing is, I found it in Massachusetts. No mines around here of any kind. I found it at an old cellar hole. Everything I found there so far have dated late 1700's -mid 1800's. So I'm really stuck with this thing. I have no idea what it is. This week I plan on just cutting a 12 x 12 sq. hole and just digging. Sift everything and see what I find. It's in the middle of the woods near my house. I have been killing this spot for years. Has produced a lot I have to say.

Are there any places like Colonial Williamsburg or Jamestown around your neck of the woods? Maybe the state archaeologist department can help identify it. It might be a candle holder for all I know, which is precious little. Looks like it could have been used to ground one of old Ben Franklin's lightning rods. Send a picture to the Smithsonian Museum or Institute, I bet they can figure it out.

As far as civil war era? no. Not really. Our area's war history goes back to 1700's with the revolution. I am one town away from the Lexington Battle Green. Where the revolution started. My area has more American History than anywhere in the country. TONS AND TONS of places to search and dig. Its great
