Can anyone tell me the purpose of a probe??

I am assuming you mean this:

http://garrett.com/images/hobby/accessories/probe.jpg

2 purposes:
To pinpoint the coin in turf that you do not want to damage. (The probe can also pry the coin out of the ground)
To pinpoint the coin without damaging the coin. (Diggers can scratch and devalue a potentially valuable coin, probes are typically brass)

thanks for the tid bits of info, I will be getting one of those probes, wouldn't want to damage any valuable finds. But I really was wondering about the probes like the ones in the banner. Thanks you though, Joe

Oh! You mean 'Pinpointer/probe'

I suppose those two terms are loosely used together.

The pinpointer/probe is a great tool!

They are great for:

Detecting shallow coins without the need to dig a big hole.
Promptly locating a target in a pile of dirt without the need to grab handfulls and wave it at your detector coil.
Finding chunks of metal camouflaged in the dirt.
Finding the targets off to the side of your hole that you didn't quite pinpoint.
Freaking your kids out that you have metal in your skull by touching it to your fillings.

thanks that clears it up for me, I guess I won't need a probe/pinpointer, when I ordered my Ace I got the Automax for 40 bucks. Thanks again, Joe

For coin and jewelry hunting, the the targets located 2-3 inches can be exactly pinpointed, so you don't need to physically probe the target with a screwdriver.....you can just either push it up out of the ground using the screwdriver, or just dig a smaller plug, because you know exactly where it is.Or......once a plug has been removed, you can check the plug to see if the target is in it, or check the hole, and find out exactly where it is in the hole, so you don't scratch it when you retrieve it.

Digging no plugs, or small plugs is good etiquette for hunting in parks and other places with manicured grass.

Thanks John, I practiced in my yard with both the detector and fine tuning my plug digging. I`m getting quite good at the manual pinpointing technique with the 150, and now with the Automax things should go even smoother

The Automax is the only metal detecting accessory I regret buying other than a few cheap diggers that didn't last a day. (I paid around $80 or so on Amazon)

I could never get more than 3/8 inch of range on a coin sized target, and with the sensitivity set high enough to reach that far it goes off at the slightest bump.
The harbor-freight pinpointer worked a bit better, however it is completely dead now. I have no clue what happened to it. It worked one day, and the next it didn't. I thought it was the battery, but a fresh battery did not help.

I am eagerly awaiting the Garrett pinpointer. If it were to go on sale in a brick and mortar store near me, I would be one of those guys standing outside waiting in line the night before to get it, lol.

When use underground detector and the coil is larger the metal is easy to be found
but you can not be told the concrete location where it is and this is the key,
coin diameter can be 13-15 inch and within this circle area the buzzer and LED light are on,
so you have to digging all the area to find the coin and you still do not know the deapth,

my friend when you at beach is no problem but when you in public park your searching action
is not very gentle, so you need mini pinpoint probe MD2002B! to locating the exact place

Clarify. A pinpointer or a probe to locate coins in the ground. If you're talking about a metal probe it is used to precisely locate the target so one doesn't have to dig up the area looking for it. If you're talking about a pinpointer it's to instantly locate the target in your hole or the pile of dirt or clods you have

THe Garrett PP will solve all the other problems you had. It is a quality instrument and tough as a tank and it will get two inches on coin-sized targets and more on larger targets.

Bill

But look how awkward that one is compared to the slim and sleek design of the new Garrett which also has a drop-in hoilster.

Bill

Someone makes nylon probes butcan't remember who. I use a Phillips with the tip ground round and dipped in epoxy so it doesn't scratch anything.

Just my opinion but I think it would be a mistake NOT to have a hand held pinpointer.
So many people make the mistake of thinking that because they can't find
the target in the hole they must be getting false signals. Not true. Usually the target IS
in the hole or in the SIDE of the hole. Also sometimes if the target is very small will blend in with the
color of the dirt. You just won't see whats in front of you. If you spent $40 on a pinpointer then
you make a good investment. It will save you a lot of time looking for your target.:)-)

even though the Automax is a cheaper pointer, it has already cut my search time down a lot. I happy I bought it.

That video looks like it was made in India, sounds in the background and the attire of the presenter.
I will personally stopping by the Garland plant, and buying USA.

MDing without a pin pointer feels as bad as going out to detect and forgetting to put clothes on! Not that i have done that, but to spare mankind and give the rest of you a chance at a female companion i don't!
