hi everyone, please help!
Every time i turn on the metal detector, the treshold is very unstable(i mean it is not a steady tone, it goes up and down). it goes haywire.
i have detatched the coil cable from the control box,and there is a steady threshold.so the problem
must be the coil. when the detector is on, i move the cable connecting to the coil a bit, and the treshold
goes crasy, stops, and then starts the unstable treshold.the cable is extremely sensitive.

how do i remove the cable from the coil(in the photo)? can i just pull it out?

would any one know how i can fix this problem, and what caused it?
thanks for any help,
john

If you have already made sure that you are not running with the sensitivity too high and have no jewelry on when grabbing the cable and moving it, I think you should send it to Minelab and have them check it out or maybe just replace it. Just my 2 cents.

where could i get a new coil? are all mine lab coils fitted with the same connections, or would i have to get a specific on for the xs-2

All sov, dont fit the same, Some coils have 5 pins an some have 6 ,Your xs has 5 an my GT has 6. So when you are looking for a coil keep that in mine. COTTON.

Don't matter if there are 5 or 6 pins. It is still a 6 pin pattern. The wires that are there all go to the same places.
In fact the coil only uses 4 pins because it only has 4 wires......2 transmit , 1 recieve, 1 ground. Except for the older coils like the BBS which has 2 grounds tied to the same place in the coil so has one more wire than it needed.

All Sov coils will fit.

Sounds to me like one of the cores has come adrift from the plug to the control box, happens all the time if you hip mount.
Undo the plug and have a look to see if one of the four wires has detached from the pins, and resolder it. I have had to do mine a few times.

He was told in a earlier thread to checkout the connector for problems.

Are you a Yooper by any chance? "pastyman"
Have not seen those things in quite a while.

O.K.
I guess your name does not mean what I thought.....
In upper Michigan people are called Yoopers. There is a lot of Scandinavian descent there. One of the traditional foods is the "pasty"(sp?) which is a fold over pastry stuffed with meat and veggies. Kind of like beef stew without the stew stuffed in a big pop tart.
Sorry for inflicting confusion on you.

Ah no probs, well I come from Cornwall, far SW UK, and we are known for our Cornish Pasties, which are steak, potato, onion and swede in a shortcrust pastry, crimpped by hand down one edge.

Only a pasty made in Cornwall is allowed to be called a Cornish Pasty, and we get very upset by meat pies being called pasties:laugh:

Interesting......
The pastys (pasties ?) in the UP have rudabagsa in them too. I don't remember if I ever ate one......been a long time.
Most of the guys put a lot of ketchup on them because they were pretty dry and bland in flavor.
Still, it does sound about like the same kind of thing in general.

One thing still stands in my mind....
When I first went up there I was seeing signs along the road advertising them, but did not know what they were. Thought they were the little things that the show girls stuck on in particular places to comply with nudity laws. Was thinking I may have a good time up there until I found out what they really were.

I am sure that the ones that you fellows have must be of superior quality and flavor, as the people of the UK are known to be proud of doing what is good and proper.

thanks everyone for the information on the pasties!
and the help on the xs. but i still have the problem!
the pins in the box connecting to the cable are perfect.
the problem is the connection from the cable into the actual 8" coil.
that is certain. in is extremely sensitive at that point, and if i move or touch the
cable at that point the threshold goes haywire, and even if i leave the detector on the
ground, untouched, there is still an unstable threshold!!
help!
thanks
john

Sure sounds like you need a new coil John.

I can tell just by the pic that the wires are all twisted, a loose conection into the coil looks to be the problem, that coil has seen some major abuse.....

I had thought the same thing but didn't want to say it.LOL! Thanks Adam

I didn't see the picture at first, but this is where they go bad from it flexing or pulled by too tight of cable.
I have one of the new style 8 inch light weight Tornado coil on E bay right now and it is as close as new as you will get with a $90 reserve on it if Ed is interested.
