Can anyone identify this Eagle Plate/Buckle?

Just dug this Eagle Plate/Buckle yesterday with my AT Pro and the 5x8 coil. It was found in Southeast Louisiana north of Lake Pontchartrain. It rang in clear at 81-82 and appears to be stamped brass - non-magnetic and measures 2 1/8" in width x 2 3/4" in length (54mm x 71 mm). The first picture is the dug picture after a light brushing with a toothbrush. The last 3 pictures were after more cleaning. The eagle is looking to its right and is holding an olive branch in its right talon and 3 arrows in its left talon. The boarder appears to be laurel wreath and I don't see any stars on it. On the back you can see where the belt loop and hook were attached. Did some research but have not been able to find anything like it. Just not sure exactly what it is or if it is Civil War Period or not.

Howdy gguidry--

Excellent find! It's a U.S. Militia Sword Belt Plate circa 1810. It's figure 159 on page 165 of PLATES AND BUCKLES OF THE AMERICAN MILITARY 1795-1874 by Sydney C. Kerksis.

Interesting;y, at the outbreak of the CW supplies were scace so the Confederate soldiers used whatever was available. Yours could have been used in both the War of 1812 AND the CW.

Best of luck and ...

Happy Hunting!

Thanks Brianc577 and thanks Blind Squirrel for the info. Am very excited to know it is 205 years old....I obviously had no idea when I first saw it that it was that old but it sure was nice seeing it when it came out of the hole. It is my first one in 2 years of digging.

I spent some time calculating how many of those I have found in my thirty years of hunting in va. If I didn't forget any my total is zero!! Great find.

Lol. Sorry about that as what I meant to say in my previous post was this is my first plate/buckle that I have found in my 2 years of detecting.

That is a great find, I wouldn't clean it anymore then you have. Take a look on the Najecki Reproductions site. They might have a picture of the one you found. They make a lot of buckles for reenactment clubs.

Thanks Jerseyjim. Left i
t as is and it is now in its own showcase. Will check that site out.
