Found this at an old homeplce that had burned down. This piece is brass. May not look it but it is.

Mike, That looks like a fancy sash buckle. I always thought that they were around the 1880's to 1890's era but they are actually much older. I have one that is very similar to yours that I dug in a Confederate camp. Pretty buckle. Donnie V
 
Probably dating back to 1830-1840 or so. Odest thing I've ever found so I'm very happy. I need to hunt this old homesite really slow because of all the trash. Can't wait to go back down there. It's about 45 miles from where I live.
