I have been using a Sov. for the past 3 yrs. and switched to the exploreer xs this year. I have been finding some good finds but I hear of so many settings. I currently am in smart advanced, slow, deep iron mask -5 and manual 30. How do I know whether I should use fast or slow. Or if I should be in digital vs the crosshairs. Or is this just personal preferance. I welcome anyones opinion as long as they are a minelab lover. Thankyou very much.

I think that if you have it at manual 30 unless you are just in perfect conditions that might be a bit noisy. Semi auto 30 would probably work just fine. If you're not noisy you're probably fine. I would try to get someone near you to hunt with and compare settings. I run just iron mask at -8 and the Smartfind screen. Manual 17 - 22. Semi auto if things aren't stable.
Keep us informed... Guvner..

I RUN MINE IN 25 MANUAL POWER 7 GAIN AND JUST DISCRIMINATE NAIL.AND RUN AUDIO 1 THIS LETS ME HEAR MOST THINGS IN THE GROUND WITH LITTLE MASKING.I HAVE FOUND 75 LARGE CENTS WITH THIS PROGRAM ITS NOISEY SOMETIME BUT GOES DEEP.

I read the post and didnt realize it was you, but if you turn both off you will be in factory setting which works good too, kind of a in between.
James that does so good with his XS run deep and goes real slow, lot slower than we do with the Sovereign even. I think Dale and Dan do too, but most all of us run the sensitivity at manual and from 20-26 is about the best we can do.
Now I will run fast at time too along with the deep on if it is a bit trashy and fast only if it is real trashy. I understand fast to give a quick check and resets fast for the next target when there is a lot of targets around, so it cant give as good of a ID of the targert. Deep takes a little longer to look at the target before it resets for the next target, so it is a more accurrate ID and one that can ID deeper targets more accuratly, but you will have to go slower to hear them.
Ironmask some run at -8 to a -12 I have talk to and James that does so good runs 0 iron mask at times.
I wish you well with the XS as it takes a little while to understand it and I still dig more trash with it then the Sovereign, but still learning when I get a chance to get out.

I personally use Iron Mask from -15 to -12 or so depending on the amount or iron, etc. I also start at a sensitivity setting of 16 and try to work towards 32 in manual mode. Like Mike said you can use auto. I do the same with auto if the ground seems to vary alot and a threshold is a problem. I start at 16 in auto and work (more quickly in auto) toward 32 in sensitivity. 30 in manual is rarely accomplished in my area.
Using FAST/DEEP depends on the amount of surface trash/targets as to whether I use fast or deep. I would recommend taking some coins, pulltabs and general trash you find everyday and experiment with what those things sound like close together. Also look at AUDIO1, 2 & 3. Some people swear by those sound settings. Although, I still use normal.
Different coils also help alot in your detecting. If you usually detect in areas that have alot of pulltabs, etc. with signals that MIGHT overlap you might want to consider an 8 or 5 inch coil. Good Luck!

Smart: clear then accept coins - left side of screen should be dark,Gain:full,Variability:8,Limit:full,sounds conduct, optipons:advanced,Response:Normal,Recovery:Fast or fast and deep to check present conditions,Sensitivity:33 auto use 8-12 after heavy rain 3 hours, once a good target is found first try different sweep speeds, this shows what works best under present conditions, use noise cancel on evewry spot,important-brings in old targets, use 8 inch factory coil. HH!!
