can alkaline batteries be recharged?

Reader

I read an article implying that alkaline batteries can be recharged. Anyone know if that's true? thanks l

They might take a surface charge but not a deep charge. There is always the chance for them to explode depending on the charge rate too. The average alkaline is not designed for the reverse current and could develop a short in the dielectric and BOOM. Somebody has rechargeable alkalines on the market, not sure who, but they come with their own charger. If you go that route, charge as per their instructions, batteries and charger.

I have heard of alkaline rechargeables also with their own charger..Do not try to recharge the average alkaline as it indeed may explode and ruin some carpeting or the like , not to mention perhaps yourself so don't experiment as they are not mde to be recharged...

You can buy a charger for ordinary alkalines. They normally have a name that involves the word 'Reviver'. They do work but you never get back to the full charge. As the other posts say if you want to recharge alkalines you should buy rechargeable alkalines like Ray-o-Vacs with the dedicated charger.

Just curious, don't know if you don't ask. YOu all are a great help. A lot of knowledge on the board! L

I use NIMH battery's that are rechargeable hundreds of times.
You can find these at walmart and many camera departments.

AA and AAA are available in most places.

They cost 2 to 3 times alkaline but after the third use basically free except for a penny or two to charge.
They come in several mAh ratings. Look for 1800 or above.

Fast chargers are available in as little as 15 minutes but use if these will cut some of the number of recharges.
I have one that can be used in the house and in the car. Nice for camping field trips.
