Camping - Picnic Grove Hunt Thursday

William-NM

New member
I decided to hunt another area that had been mentioned in old newspapers as a picnic site, near the semi-ghost town of Pinos Altos. It's still in use as a campground and turned out to be very trashy with tons of flat rusted bottlecaps, bullets, campfire aluminum, etc. I dug 65 coins, just one lonely Wheatie, a 1951 D, the rest was all modern, though a lot of early 60s to mid 70s pennies.

I did find an early firewood splitting wedge, horseshoe, slaymaker padlock, can opener, and modern nail clipper.

Even the religious cross was aluminum, though it seems to fascinate the pagan-looking figure that I found!

Oh, I also salvaged a small cooler from the creek, which cleaned up well and is nice, as I was about to buy one to keep my lunches cool for those ghost town trips, and also brought home a bag of recycling, including a fair amount of copper fittings & pipe ($2.30/pound - enough to pay for the gas). A skimpy hunt, but a gorgeous day and setting. I'll give it another shot sometime, maybe my cleanup will help unearth some better finds.
Thanks for looking and luck in the hunt!!

You had a great hunt with all that loot! Congrats!

I think so too, John - I only covered a fraction of it. Just have to take it slow & low, and hopefully I can pick up a 5x8 coil before too long. BTW, I was detecting down by the creek the other day and met a woman who has some friends with places in Pinos Altos. She's a new detectorist and seemed enthusiastic about having a hunting buddy. That would be fun for me - and the best part is, she was driving a big 4wd pickup, heh.

Yep, Salida - I've gotta pick up a tumbler! I'm on jar 2 of rotten zincolns! Then, it's off to the coinstar for them. I keep the Coppers separate - maybe they'll be worth something for my grand children
