Camera Is In The Shop...:

I posted a while back that my Nikon Coolpix 885 was not exposing properly. Pics were coming out all "washed out" in all modes. I tried everything from reprogramming everything back to "default" to changing batteries, etc. Yesterday, the aperture appeared to "lockup" in the closed position. Can't even get a view on the screen. To make matters worse I couldn't find my paperwork or receipt for when I purchased it. I was able to do a search of the archives on this forum and found the exact date that I posted when I bought it. (4/26/02) Called the camera shop and they searched their data base...Found my receipt where I purchased the cam on April 26, 2002 and just made the deadline for the 1 yr. warranty.
I'm usually pretty good about keeping receipts and warranty info. This was just one of those times where I blew it.
Took the camera back today and it should be back in my hands in a few weeks! I'm just happy I don't have to pay for the fix myself.

Good News Doug........
I kinda thought that you had a far more serious problem with this camera when you first started posting about the problems.....

Doug, Be very thankful you were still under warranty. I sent my Coolpix 775 back to Nikon for repair and they wanted estimated $195 to repair it. I said no, send it back and I bought a Canon in the meantime. I now have in my possesion 1 excellent Canon and 1 excellent but not workable Nikon. I researched by reading several forums on comments by different owners and it appears Nikon has problems with some models of the Coolpix for the lens not opening, which was my problem. I also read their customer service was less than sterling, but I have no complaints other than price of repair. I found it easier to buy a new 2.1 mp for about 250 with a full year warranty than getting my old one repaired for about 200 dollars including shipping and only have warranty for 180 days on the repair only............Don in South Jersey

Thanks for the information, Don. Believe me I am VERY thankful that I made the "deadline" on the warranty! Still cost me $25.00 to ship and handle! That kinda sucks! in my opinion.
Before I purchased the 885 I did what I thought was some good research. I bought it for it's excellent macro features, plus the NIKON reputation and what I thought was an excellent deal in the price range of comparable digitals at the time. To be honest, I have never been really satisfied with the camera. I have never got what I feel is the quality of photos I expect from the Camera. When I get it back, I may just sell it and put money to a better or more user friendly cam. I've been looking at Royal's pics and macros from his Sony and they are impressive!!!!
Take care, Doug

I'm happy to have made the warranty "deadline" which was so close! I was afraid it was a bigger problem, too! I will wait to get the cam back and try it out before I make a judgement to upgrade it or buy a different camera. I'm told it will be 4 to 8 weeks to get it back from NIKON!
I still have my trusty MAVICA FD7 :>)

Hi Doug,
A fella here in town had some new cam and the pics were not what they should have been for a cam in that price range. Well, after a year he accidently sat on it while getting into his truck and did some major damage. He sent it in and after getting it back it provides him outstanding pics..... so, maybe yours was never truly right either.
My old floppy mavica backup cam is still an impressive performer too.
best of luck with your ordeal
Tony
