Camera help, trying to decide on a good digital

Hello all, I have been using a Canon A95 for the past few years and like the camera for the most part. I decided to upgrade to have a little more creative control and up the megs to 7 or 10 as I do some cropping. I had an A710is ordered, but the salesman talked me into an A570 as he said the feedback was better, the lens was sharper, etc. When I got the unit, I was surprised at the cheapness of it. Also, the LCD screen was grainy and after checking reviews I found out this was a common problem, not specific to my camera. I should have checked the reviews before I made that quick over-the-phone decision. I also have found most of the reviews a little biased.

I am going to send it back and am now looking at a G7 or A640. Both are 10 megs and the G7 has image stabilization, 6X zoom and a much sharper LCD. I'm what you would call a serious amateur and I want a camera that I can slip into a coat pocket. I know the DSLR's are much better quality, but bulkier and more $$. I was wondering if there were any people out there who have used the Canon high end pocket digitals and what their impressions are. I'm not stuck on Canon but the Canon cameras and printers have served me well over the years. Thanks, Ron.
