Camera Advice.....

Royal

Well-known member
I am thinking about buying this package. I know diddly about lens. I am interested in Macro, bugs and such and also just want to take good pic's. Is this Macro telephoto lens the way to go? How about the other lens? Is it a good one for general photography?

Thanks, Royal

Good evening!
I see that it is the Canon Digital Rebel XTi like I have... They say it was a kit, but they've removed the "kit lens" and replaced it with Tamron lenses.

I have the 17-85 Tamron that is included in the auction. It worked beautifully with my Digital Rebel XT, but it doesn't perform as well with the XTi that I have. It will hunt on the focus if there is a lack of contrast in the scene you're shooting. The XTi has nine focus points while the XT has seven... I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

That lens is less expensive than the kit lens also. I bought mine for under thirty bucks brand new on eBay if i remember right.

In spite of the focus issue it does take decent quality photos.

I haven't had any experience with the longer lens in the auction.

I would recommend getting the XTi with the kit lens, and then purchasing a 75-300 lens in addition.

Really, really be careful that you're getting a Canon with a USA warranty... There are many, many sellers out there selling gray market cameras just a little cheaper than USA warranted ones.

Please keep in mind these are just my opinions/scattered thoughts...

What camera are you using now? I remember that you posted some very nice bug photos. It would be hard to top those.

I would not purchase the kit in question. They removed the Canon kit lens and substituted 2 Tamron lenses.

I would instead buy the Camera with the original kit lens and then spring for an additional lens with macro capability.

I was looking at the new Olympus E-510. It has live view and anti shake technology built in. Check it out.

and the dang CD500 is just driving me nuts. .

I used to take Panoramas with it and stitch them together using Panorama Factory with great results. I could take fifteen or twenty pictures and stitch them with flawless results. I would do it without a tripod and still they were great, at least in my view.

Now when I take a picture the only place it is in focus is the center of the picture. I can not get a good picture with it at all. I contacted Sony and paid them a hundred and sixty bucks or so and sent the camera in. They sent me a reconditioned one and it did the same thing. They said they could not find anything wrong with the one I sent in.

I just used the thing for a year or so and finally got fed up with it and contacted them again. They did the same thing again for another 150bucks or so. I still got a piece of crap camera, with the same problem. I can get decient macros but nothing to brag about but I just have quit useing the thing. I would NEVER buy another Sony camera. Never!

I have not taken many pictures in a long time because of this but am getting the bug to start again.

Here is an example of the crap pictures I am getting with my Sony. This is a 5 meg camera and I always take my pictures at man rez, of course this in saved for the web. Look at the left side of the picture! They are all like that.

I really don't know what the problem is with the Sony but they sure have lost a customer.

I might be doing something wrong but I have taken over 5000 pictures with the two of them and have no clue what it could be

Yep, there is something terribly wrong there. Hope you get a good one....

I really like those bug photos. Come down to Florida, you'll have a ball with all the bugs down here.
