California city?

What's the name of the city in northern California?

Eureka I think it is. It means "I found it!"

Well, Eureka. I found my first wheat penny.

Hold on everyone, for the world may be about to end.

I found it in the Sunnyside elementary school playground in Portland, Oregon. That school was built in the 1920s or 1930s.

It almost wasn't a wheaty, for it is a 1957.

Now I need to find a US silver coin.

Maybe my jinx is over.

Congrats on your first wheat.I didn't realize they were that hard to come by.Up here in the north country i have got 4 this year so far.My oldest coin so far this year period is a 1942 wheat also have gotten a 47,52 and a 58. hopefully your jinx is over.

wheaties come as they come........ In a vacant lot kaddywampas from me (in SW IOWA ).... I found a 1912 & 1920 wheatie!! Right across the road from there I pulled up an 1897 & 1905 IH.....Same day! Just depends on where you're swingin'

HAHAHA! Good one! I've got 3 hats!!!! 1 for clad, 1 for old, one for gold. The clad hat works the best! LOL HH Bigsquid55

I forget what detector your swingin', but I have found that in my neighborhood, the wheats are sometimes 10+ inches deep...need a good detector and coils to get em...I just got hold of a White's Quantum II for cheap, and am giving up the Discovery 3300 and all 3 coils for it...Just as cheap...It is currently on FeeBay...I think the White's will serve me better...I personally think the LandStar was way better than the Discovery, and wish I had never got rid of it now...
Discovery goes deep, but is unstable with the 10" coil, harder to Ground Balance, and chews batteries in 6 hours...Not my cup of tea with Alkalines going for 12 bucks a pair now...The Whites batteries last for 20 hours...I can live well with that...

HH,

Hi GGG:

My machine is an Elite 2200 and will detect a penny at about 9" in air with the standard 8" coil. Most of the detecting I do is on lawns and in order for me to dig a 10" deep hole, I would have to cut a plug about 10" in dia and remove about a quarter of a cubic foot of dirt, not something I am apt to do in a park.

I do have a question about deep targets. Do deep targets that are actually coins provide just as consistent an indication as shallow targets? I get a lot of deep signals however they invariably are erratic and inconsistent. In the park near my house there are many hundreds of such targets.

Hi,Folks! From all I've heard, WHEATS depend on your locale. I live in this old town here in SW IOWA. I call it the "Star Trek" Town..... Ya know.... "Where No Man Has Gone Before"! The wheats are plentiful & the IH's are around, too! This town is 150 yrs old & I'm havin' the time of my MD'ing life! You folks goin' to school yards & parks.... the wheats might still be there... but... don't ya think those grounds have seen many, many hunting seasons? Venture out!!! Go to an old town within a tolereable radius of where you are and swing some isolated sidewalk... Ya might be surprised!!! My 2 cents worth! HH Bigsquid55 GO GET 'EM!!!

The 3300 would do 10 inches with ease, but only in non trash areas...There are a few techniques I use for the deep coins...when they are erratic, try a quick waggle over them...a few short, quick swings...if they are still erratic, it is probably junk...if it stays solid, dig it...Yeah...a 10" hole for me has just about that diameter at the surface...it does make a mess sometimes...I usually do a double flap...fold out like the top of a cardboard box...Anything to save the grass
