Probably 99% of my land rings are found in the top 3-4" of the soil, so that's where I concentrate my hunts. The concentric coils give off a much more distinctive audio sound pinpointing off the toe of the coil then the standard AT Pro coil. However, this is only in the top 3-4 inches, and beyond that depth, you lose the nice clear audio. By putting the coil over a target with the pinpoint button held in place and sliding the coil backwards centered, you will get a sudden cut off of audio. The better targets such as coins and rings give off a more sudden cut off audio, and rings bang harder then coins. Once you learn the detector with the coil really well, you also rule out the possibility of the coil going over a larger target. Junk targets don't have that sudden cut off of audio sound, so they are easy to rule out. And finally, pinpointing off the toe of the coil can give you a much more exact pin pointing of the where-abouts of the target, which allows faster target retrieval, and even faster yet using the Pro Pointer. Leave your digger in the bag and probe/pop the targets out with a screwdriver, and you save even more time.
Using this technique allows you to easily double your good target retrieval, which results in more rings being retrieved also. But....it takes a lot of work also. There is no easy ticket for finding rings, but there are definitely better ways......
