Cabin Fever Setting In.....Made These Tonite :)

Snow, -20 with the wind, and tired from a weeks work. I dug up some older coins I had laying around the house and made these.......

Only -8 C today sunny and light winds. Another foot of snow due tonight...might just try to imitate your ring making.
I think I will start with a more current coin, maybe a penny, copper should be easier to form. And should I destroy
my first ring...no loss. I'll post the results I make with the penny...
BUT, with a 7pm tide I just might try to get an hour or so in the ocean this afternoon. Last month was so bad I only
got into the water once and only two days detecting the wet sand and no keepers...I think I will use the one penny
I found in a 3 hour water hunt last month.

You amaze me how you get the date and other words to look so good on the outer diameter of the rings. I have
watched videos on making the rings...Maybe we need a contest for first rings made while hibernating...

Well the afternoon came with a rise in temperature to +1 C, the sun was bright and the winds calmed down. I had to decide to make the ring or go to the ocean for a couple of hours. Guess what I did...what I knew best...I went to the ocean before the evening snow and Super Bowl came. Glad I did, only two targets in two hours, one one ounce sinker and one 1929 14K wedding band. I know I made out better detecting than ring making. Today is another story, schools are closed again as they have been all last week because of the snow.

Much to my surprise John now posted a video on how he makes the double sided rings while I was out detecting. I made out again! He reveled many steps that I had not seen. Annealing before beating the coin into submission, a wood mandrel for deburring and polishing, and how important it is to and how to center the drilling process. For sure these are mistakes I would have made. Now armed with the video and a day to show my grandson how to make a ring...well, I may have to make a trip to the hardware store before completing the ring. But "Today is the day" as Mel Fisher would say...Yesterday for gold, today for a ring to be made with my grandson.
